Deacs Deny Duke, Strut to Big Dance

I didn’t want to get emotionally caught up in this Wake Forest basketball team figuring they would break my heart and I didn’t want that to happen again.

I was skeptical they weren’t as good as people were telling me they were. Couldn’t be, that Wake Forest is good in basketball? That’s not the typical narrative. Wake loses in hoops a lot historically especially over the past decade.

But I got drawn in several weeks ago by guys I went to Wake with 100 years ago who were excited about this year’s team.

Sure glad I did.

Today I felt about Wake Forest basketball the way I haven’t felt since Tim Duncan and Randolph Childress won the ACC Tournament several decades ago. That day I let out a happy prideful cry, because the team representing the school I attended made me proud, brought me joy, and showed toughness, talent, and the ability to win in the clutch. Just like today.

Today in its win over a formidable Duke team, I fell in love with this squad, and how it plays together. I’m all in regardless of what happens the rest of the season.

Did you see Cam Stamina sticking those clutch free throws down the stretch and then stealing the ball late in the game that led to Boopie’s layup? Did you see Andrew Carr play like a star? Did you see Hunter Games Sallas stick jumper after jumper, making it difficult for Duke to defend him, show us all why he was a McDonalds All-American.

Wake Forest basketball is back.

And it’s beautiful.

The stadium was sold out. The Wake students stormed the court. No doubt as I type this the Quad is being rolled.

Welcome to wildness in Winston-Salem and Wake Forest basketball.

Evidently, all it took was one heart-felt speech to get the Demon Deacons focused on one goal.

They won this one for Sammy Sportface.
