The USF Bulls are coming off their first win over a FBS team in over 700 days when they defeated the Rice Owls 42-29. This was a big win for coach Alex Golesh, coaches, and players. The Bulls have two wins that has not happened since the 2021 season. In the game against Rice, they looked good on both sides of the ball. Byrum Brown is now second all-time in USF Bulls program history for passing yards in a game. The defense stopped JT Daniels and the Owls offense as Daniels left the game with an ankle injury. USF won a conference game for the first time since 2021. They did not win any in 2022. The Bulls now look to hit the road for conference play and their opponent is the Navy Midshipmen. Navy leads the series 2-1 and in the last game, the Midshipmen won 35-3 in Annapolis.
The Midshipmen come into this game with a 1-2 record. They are coming off a conference four-point loss to the Memphis Tigers, 28-24. Currently, the Tigers are tied with USF Bulls with a 1-0 conference record. To start the season, the Navy lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 42-3. Their only win came against Wagner in a shutout, 24-0. The Navy has never fallen to the Bulls at home. Looking back at the game against Memphis, Navy did everything right against the Tigers. As in the past, the Midshipmen have been a running team. They had 299 rushing yards last week with only 133 through the air. Look for them to use the running game against USF. The defense had an interception and is challenging themselves. Look for them to force turnovers against the Bulls.
For the first time in a while, USF looked like they were having fun. The Bulls started the game off well and let Rice stay in the game. The fact that USF fumbled the ball at the two-yard line and then had the next play go for an 80-yard touchdown play. After that play, USF shut it down. The Owls scored a late touchdown but that was it. Look for the Bull’s defense to continue to be aggressive as it has been the last two weeks. They have blitzed and gotten home with some sacks. The offense might be catching its stride. Byrum Brown looked efficient both on the ground and throwing the ball. Brown was not the only one that provided yards on the ground. Naiem Simmons set a Florida wide receiver record with 272 yards in a single game. Look for them to have a similar game plan against the Navy.
Both teams come into this game playing good games last week. Navy did lose but looked good against what many will say might win the conference in the Memphis Tigers. The Bulls will look for their first win in Annapolis in program history. Navy will have to contain the USF Bulls offense. On the other hand, Navy will keep the Bulls defense on its heels with the running game. This should be a back-and-forth game. USF comes in starting to get everything on track on both sides. If they can contain the ground game of the Midshipmen, they should come out on top.
