Jimmy Mac is coming back – to Wake Forest.

This Saturday he’s coming back to smoke cigars with the fellas and strut around the Quad of his alma mater he hasn’t visited since he and Sammy Sportface cried in each others’ arms on graduation day 37 years ago despondent that college was over and real life was beginning.

On the Quad six hours before kick-off,  Martha and the Vandellas will be dancing and singing to their 1967 mega-hit tune “Jimmy Mac – When Are You Coming Back?” Mac will slow dance with Sportface.

“I’m coming back to take a stroll on the Wake Forest campus where I read John Milton’s Paradise Lost and wore a Scottish Quilt for Halloween,” said Jimmy Mac. “I also want to return to the scene in the Pika House lounge where I sat ringside on a boom box recorder and called the boxing match between Razzor and German, a three-round TKO. What I recall vividly was when the opening bell rang I said to no one in particular: ‘I smell Burger King and boy am I hungry.’ “

“It’s emotional that Jimmy Mac is coming back,” said Sportface. “Mac and I go way back and have always had each others’ backs. During the summer of 1983, he walked into my Broadmoor Apartment and told me I needed to check out a new 24-hour sports channel called ESPN. That same summer we also watched Rocky III together three times in one day.”

Mac is back not only to stroll the Quad but also to have chili at Sonny Tarzan’s house to warm his belly before the game.

“I read about the chili party in Sportface’s blog,” said Jimmy Mac. “That almost made me not want to come back.”

Mac will also be coming back to the Pika tailgate a few hours before the 8 pm kickoff.

“I came back to give back to the fellas,” he said. “I’m bringing a fistful of cigars. I’m also coming back to see Troy Jackson, Pistol Pete, Hanby, and Greenie. During the tailgate we’re going to talk about great it is that Jimmy Mac is coming back. We’ll crank up that tune on Sportface’s boombox, eat Bojangles chicken, and drink beer.”

For nothing, we lack. Because Jimmy Mac is coming back.
