Jackson State Stays Perfect With 41-14 Win Over Texas Southern

The Jackson State Tigers (9-0) defeated Texas Southern Tigers (4-5) 41-14 Saturday night before a sellout crowd at PNC Stadium in Houston. This was the second time that these two teams had faced off since 2016. Since the SWAC started divisional play in 1999, both teams have met just 16 times. Jackson State has won seven straight over Texas Southern. TSU’s last official win over JSU occurred in 2000.

 

Led by third-year head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, JSU has lived up to the hype with an undefeated record and is ranked #5 and #9 by several FCS polls. Jackson State has the top offense in the SWAC (480.6) and defense (194.1) led by QB Shedeur Sanders (the top passer in the SWAC) with over 2, 425 yards and 24 touchdowns. Jackson State validated its claim as the top team in the SWAC.

 

In an electrically charged atmosphere which was mostly generated by the presence of “Coach Prime”, JSU wasted little time in establishing control of the game. JSU scored first at the 8:54 mark of the 1st quarter on a three-yard run from scrimmage by RB Sy’veon Wilkerson. The point after kick was good.  It was JSU 7 – TSU 0

 

At the 4:54 mark of the quarter, QB Shedeur Sanders connected on a 38-yard TD strike to Tight End  DJ Stevens.  The point after kick was good. JSU 14 – TSU 0.

 

At the 3:33 mark of the quarter, TSU responded with a shuttle pass from QB Andrew Body to RB Jacorey Howard at the 25yd line of JSU for a catch and run for their first score. The point after kick was good. JSU 14 – TSU 7.

 

JSU scored again on a brilliant 41 yd TD run by RB Sy’veon Wilkerson.  The point after kick was good. JSU 21 – TSU 7 which carried to the end of the 1st quarter.

 

The second quarter was a defensive battle whereas neither team was able to put together a complete drive due to multiple penalties and good defensive efforts on both teams. At halftime, the score was JSU 21 – TSU 7.

 

In the 3rd quarter, TSU RB Jacorey Howard scored on an 11-yard run from scrimmage. The point after kick was good. JSU 21 – TSU 14.

 

At the 5:31 mark of the 3rd quarter, JSU fired back with a quarterback keeper by Shedeur Sanders for 2 yards and a TD. The point after kick was good. JSU – 28 – TSU 14.

 

Later in the quarter, JSU struck again with QB Shedeur hooking up with WR Shane Hooks for a 7yd touchdown pass.  The 2 point conversion attempt was no good. JSU 34 – TSU 14

 

The third quarter ended JSU 34 – TSU 14.

 

In the 4th quarter at the 14:19 mark of the game JSU scores again on a 9  yd pass from QB Shedeur to WR Shane Hooks sealing the victory. The point after was good and the final score was JSU 41 – TSU 14.

 

Jackson State QB Shedeur Sanders was 23 out 33, 259 yds, and 3 TDs accompanied by RB Sy’veon Wilkerson’s  26 carries for 214 yards and 2 TDs
