The American Conference enters Week 4 with another busy weekend ahead. Seven games will take place across Friday and Saturday. The conference schedule features two Friday night games and five Saturday contests. Several teams also enter the weekend with plenty to prove. The American released the latest kickoff times and television information on September 14.
Army Travels to Temple
Army opens Week 4 action against Temple on Friday at 4 p.m. ET. ESPN will carry the matchup from Philadelphia. Army started conference play against South Florida in Week 2. The Black Knights now face another important league test. Temple also enters the game looking to build momentum. The Owls suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss against Toledo last week. Temple quarterback Ajani Sheppard produced four touchdowns in that defeat. He threw three touchdown passes and added one rushing score. Army’s option attack could create problems for the Temple defense. Meanwhile, Temple must find ways to limit Army’s rushing attack.
Navy Visits UAB
Navy visits UAB on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. ESPN will televise the game from Birmingham. This matchup brings two American programs together with different styles. Navy traditionally relies heavily on its rushing attack. UAB will look to control the game at home. The Blazers also have an opportunity to make an early conference statement. The Friday night setting adds another layer to the matchup. Both teams will want to enter October with momentum.
Colorado State at UTSA
UTSA begins Saturday’s conference slate against Colorado State. The Roadrunners host the Rams at noon ET on ESPNU. UTSA opened its season with several challenging nonconference matchups. The Roadrunners now get another chance to establish themselves. The home crowd should provide an advantage for UTSA. However, Colorado State will bring a difficult challenge into the Alamodome. This game also gives UTSA an important opportunity before conference play intensifies. Every early win can become valuable later in the season.
North Carolina Central at East Carolina
East Carolina hosts North Carolina Central at 4 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will stream the game from Greenville. The Pirates enter the matchup after rallying past Old Dominion. East Carolina won that game 20-17. Safety Ayden Ducanson made a major impact in the comeback. He returned his first career interception 67 yards for a touchdown. East Carolina cannot afford to overlook its opponent. North Carolina Central will try to create problems with an upset. The Pirates also need to continue developing their offense. A strong performance could build confidence before conference games become more important.
Louisiana at Charlotte
Charlotte welcomes Louisiana at 6:30 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will carry the game. The 49ers enter the matchup at 0-3. Charlotte lost a 26-21 game against Appalachian State last week. Charlotte has faced a challenging opening stretch. The 49ers also lost to The Citadel and Ole Miss. Now, Charlotte returns home with another opportunity. Louisiana presents a chance to finally break into the win column. The 49ers need cleaner execution on both sides. They also need to avoid another close finish going against them.
Southern Miss at Tulane
Tulane hosts Southern Miss at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Green Wave enters Week 4 with a 1-2 record. Tulane defeated South Alabama before losing to Kansas State. Tulane now returns home for an important nonconference matchup. The Green Wave need consistency after two losses in three games. Southern Miss will try to disrupt Tulane’s rhythm. Meanwhile, Tulane needs another strong defensive performance. This game could provide an important confidence boost. The Green Wave also have conference games approaching quickly.
Houston Christian at North Texas
North Texas hosts Houston Christian at 7:30 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will stream the matchup. The Mean Green enter the game after a challenging early schedule. North Texas has already faced Indiana and Texas State. Now, North Texas gets another opportunity at home. Houston Christian will look to challenge the Mean Green throughout the game. The matchup could come down to North Texas’ ability to control the line. The Mean Green also need consistent quarterback play.
South Florida at Bowling Green
South Florida heads to Bowling Green for its final nonconference road game. The Bulls visit Doyt L. Perry Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. ESPN+ will carry the matchup.
Several Teams Get a Week Off
Not every American team will play during Week 4. Memphis, Florida Atlantic, Rice and Tulsa will have the weekend off. Those teams can use the extra time for preparation and recovery. Memphis enters the break at 3-1 after beating UT Martin 45-21. Quarterback Marcus Stokes threw four touchdown passes in the victory. Florida Atlantic sits at 2-1 after beating FIU 16-10. Rice enters the break at 1-2 after falling to Western Michigan 28-21. Tulsa remains unbeaten at 3-0 after crushing East Texas A&M 42-0. The Golden Hurricane now prepare for Arkansas in their next game. Week 4 gives the American another chance to showcase its depth. The seven-game slate includes several intriguing matchups. Conference play will become increasingly important as October approaches. For now, every team has something to gain from the weekend.
