Texas Southern (1-4) celebrated its 2023 Homecoming and first win of the season with a 52-7 rout of Lincoln University (0-6). This would be the second meeting of the two teams. Lincoln University is based in Oakland, CA and they are in their 3rd year of playing football. TSU defeated Lincoln 37-2 in their first meeting and seemingly picked up where they left off last year dominating this game in all aspects on both sides of the ball.

In the 1st Qtr TSU relied on its running game. They scored off an eight-play 66-yard drive on a 13-yard run by RB Ladarius Owens and point-after for a 7-0 lead.  TSU’s defense tightened up on Lincoln and forced them to punt. Lincoln Punter Steven Earnest’s kick was downed at TSU’s 2-yard line.  The first two plays of their second drive were QB Jace Wilson completed passes of 30 and 33 yards. On the drive, Wilson went 4-5 74 yards and RB Jacorey Howard finished it off with a four-yard run to make it 14-0 TSU.

From the start of the 2nd Qtr, TSU’s defense flexed its muscle with a swarming defense forcing Lincoln into two sacks and incomplete passes. With 6:48 left in the half, Texas Southern would start a drive that would extend the lead to 21-0 on a Jacorey Howard 36-yard run. But Lincoln would respond with a nine-play 75-yard drive that was capped off by a Khibo Norfleet 10-yard run to make it 21-7 before the half. That would be the last time

The end of the third quarter was a break from the pounding for the Oaklanders as STU ran for three more scores. A Jace Wilson 25-yard run, one from Howard from the one, and one from Jonathan Lewis from 23 made it 42-7.

At the 9:21 mark of the 4th qtr, TSU QB J. Wilson connected with WR Tavaris Achane for a 51-yard TD pass. That made it TSU 49 – Lincoln 7. TSU tacked on a field goal to close out the scoring for the night, 52-7.

It was a game that saw the Tigers of Texas Southern roll up 568 yards of offense, 376 of that on the ground. The defense did its part by allowing just 238 total yards in the game.

For Texas Southern, Wilson finished 14-23 for 130 yards passing while adding 37 yards on the ground with the 25-yard score. LaDarius Owens ground out 139 yards on 13 carries with a 31-yard touchdown. Jacorey Howard had a big day with three scores to go with 94 yards on just 10 carries.

Next week is an off week that will be followed by a trip to Bethune-Cookman in Daytona.
