The American Conference enters Week 6 with several games carrying significant early-season implications. Conference races rarely become clear during October’s opening weeks. However, every league loss makes the path toward December considerably tougher. Week 6 features seven games involving American teams. Six of those contests feature conference matchups. South Florida and UTSA open the slate Thursday night in San Antonio. Meanwhile, several intriguing matchups fill Saturday’s schedule. Florida Atlantic gets the week off. Here is a look at every American Conference game during Week 6.
South Florida at UTSA — Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
South Florida travels to the Alamodome looking to rebound from its first loss. The Bulls enter at 4-1 overall and 1-1 inside the American. Temple stunned USF 17-13 Saturday night in Tampa. Meanwhile, UTSA enters at 4-1 after defeating Rice 16-14. The Roadrunners stand 1-0 in conference play. UTSA also owns one of college football’s strongest conference home records. The Roadrunners are 25-1 in conference home games since 2020. These programs have split their first two meetings. UTSA crushed USF 49-21 in San Antonio during 2023. Frank Harris produced 523 total yards and six touchdowns. However, USF returned the favor last season. The Bulls hammered UTSA 55-23 in Tampa. USF led 45-10 at halftime during that victory. Therefore, Thursday serves as an important rubber match. USF needs a faster offensive start after struggling against Temple. UTSA wants to protect its impressive home-field advantage.
Tulane at Army — Saturday, Noon ET, CBS Sports Network
Tulane and Army meet at Michie Stadium in another important conference matchup. Both teams enter with 2-2 records. Army lost a heartbreaking 31-29 game against Louisiana Tech last week. Meanwhile, Tulane enjoyed a bye after defeating Southern Miss 24-21. These programs share considerable history. Army’s records show Tulane holding a 14-10-1 advantage across 25 meetings. The Green Wave defeated Army 24-17 last season. However, Army dominated Tulane 35-14 during the 2024 American Championship Game. Army’s option offense always creates preparation problems. However, Tulane has seen the Black Knights enough to understand the challenge. This matchup could become one of Saturday’s most physical games.
Charlotte at North Texas — Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+
North Texas enters Week 6 after surviving one of the season’s wildest conference games. The Mean Green defeated Tulsa 45-44 in overtime Thursday night. That victory moved North Texas to 3-2 overall. Charlotte enters looking for answers after Memphis dominated the 49ers 59-8. The programs have met three times. Charlotte owns a 2-1 series advantage. However, North Texas dominated the most recent matchup. The Mean Green defeated Charlotte 54-20 last season. Drew Mestemaker threw for a school-record 608 yards during that victory. He also tossed four touchdown passes. North Texas now gets Charlotte at DATCU Stadium. The Mean Green offense can create explosive plays quickly. Charlotte must prevent another game from getting away early.

Tulsa at Navy — Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network
Tulsa and Navy both enter Saturday searching for their first American Conference victory. Tulsa stands at 3-2 overall and 0-1 inside the conference. Meanwhile, Navy enters at 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play. Both teams suffered painful losses last week. North Texas stopped Tulsa’s two-point attempt in overtime for a 45-44 victory. Meanwhile, Air Force defeated Navy 14-9 in Colorado Springs. Navy owns a commanding 9-2 advantage in the all-time series against Tulsa. The Midshipmen defeated the Golden Hurricane 42-23 last season. Furthermore, Navy has won three consecutive meetings. However, Tulsa already owns an impressive victory over Oklahoma State this season. This game could become critical for both teams’ bowl hopes.
UConn at Temple — Saturday, 3:45 p.m. ET, ESPNU
Temple returns home with plenty of momentum after upsetting South Florida. The Owls improved to 2-3 overall after their 17-13 victory in Tampa. Temple also moved to 1-0 inside the American. UConn represents the only nonconference opponent facing an American team this week. These programs meet for the 22nd time Saturday. Temple holds a 14-7 advantage in the all-time series. However, UConn won the most recent matchup 29-20 in 2024. Temple has still controlled much of the recent history. The Owls have won seven of the last 10 meetings. Temple’s defense frustrated USF throughout Saturday’s victory. The Owls will need another strong performance against the Huskies.
Rice at East Carolina — Saturday, 4 p.m. ET, ESPN+
Rice travels to Greenville for its first game at East Carolina since 2009. The Owls enter after a difficult 16-14 loss against UTSA. East Carolina gets another opportunity to strengthen its position inside the conference race. Rice holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. However, East Carolina has won both previous meetings in Greenville. The Pirates won 41-28 during the 2005 meeting. They followed with a 49-13 victory during 2009. Rice won the most recent game 24-17 during 2023. That contest also marked Rice’s first American Conference game. Saturday brings another important conference matchup between programs with limited recent history. Rice needs to recover quickly after the narrow UTSA defeat. Meanwhile, East Carolina gets an opportunity to defend its home field.
UAB at Memphis — Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2
Week 6 finishes with one of the conference’s most entertaining rivalries. UAB travels to Memphis for the latest edition of the Battle for the Bones. The Blazers enter at 3-2 after defeating Samford 33-14. Meanwhile, Memphis comes home after destroying Charlotte 59-8. Tigers quarterback Marcus Stokes threw five touchdown passes during that victory. However, UAB owns the historical advantage in this rivalry. The Blazers lead the series 11-7 entering the 19th meeting. UAB also owns the Battle for the Bones trophy.
The Blazers stunned then-No. 22 Memphis 31-24 last season in Birmingham. That victory returned the trophy to UAB for the first time since 2011. The rivalry dates back to 1997. Additionally, the programs met annually from 1999 through 2012 as Conference USA opponents. The unique trophy features a bronzed rack of ribs. However, Saturday’s game means much more than barbecue bragging rights. Both programs need this victory in a crowded American race.
Week 6 Could Reshape the American Race
The American Conference enters an important stretch of its schedule. South Florida needs to respond after losing its undefeated record. UTSA can make another statement by protecting the Alamodome. Meanwhile, Temple suddenly has momentum after its upset victory in Tampa. North Texas also enters Saturday feeling confident after its overtime thriller. Memphis looks dangerous following a 59-point explosion against Charlotte. However, UAB has already proven it can beat the Tigers. Army and Tulane also have championship experience from recent seasons. Therefore, Week 6 offers plenty of opportunities for the conference standings to change. The season remains young. Still, October conference losses can become difficult to overcome. Every team wants to reach the American Conference Championship Game in December. Week 6 could reveal which programs have the best chance of getting there.
