Perfect Storyline: Carolina Completes 45-Point Comeback Over Wake Forest

Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

Two years ago the North Carolina Tar Heels trailed Wake Forest by 21 points in the second half. But with clutch performances, they came back and won the game, 59 to 53. It was one of the greatest comebacks in Carolina football history.

Then a year ago Carolina fell behind by 18 points late in the third quarter and – again – stormed back and upended the 9th-ranked and undefeated Wake Forest team, 58-55.

Two monumental, improbable, mind-bending comebacks. Carolina came through. So clutch and admirable. Such winners. They never quit.

These two memorable comebacks provide alluring history as the two teams play a football game again 11 days from now in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

To make this a third-straight second-half comeback that is even more mind-boggling than the past two years, Wake’s football team needs to get up by 45 points in the second half. And then blow the lead to Carolina again.

As long as Wake is going to surrender its lead in the second half – which we know they will – we might as well root for a much bigger collapse than the two previous years. Let’s root for compelling theatre.

If you’re going to lose a big lead, lose a much bigger one than any college football team ever has. Fail on an unprecedented scale. Insert yourselves into the national conversation at kitchen tables and in sports bars across the fruited plain. You want Joe Americas and Julie Americas everywhere to be saying things like:

  • “Did you hear Wake Forest blew a 45-point second-half lead to Carolina today? Guess they’re not rolling the Quad tonight at Wake.”
  • “45 points ahead and lost? In the second half? That’s got to be an NCAA record.”
  • “How many turnovers did Wake have? More than the eight they had against Louisville? How many pic sixes? Five? Ten?”
  • “What’s happened to that football program? They were ranked 10th in the country three weeks ago and now gave up a 45-point second-half lead. Amazing achievements by that football team. Three years in a row crashing in the second half to lose to their bitter rivals, Carolina? How painful can anything be?”

Yes, this is what we want, 15,000 undergraduate students in Chapel Hill partying all night long on Franklin Street. They need more all-night raucous parties like they’ve celebrated after come-from-behind wins the past two years against Wake Forest and the three men’s national championships in basketball.

Carolina deserves more parties, more wins to celebrate, and more reasons to celebrate.

Do it, Carolina. Pull off the biggest comeback ever against Wake Forest on November 12. Race back from 45 down and snatch the victory.

As you walk off the field, sing your school’s jingle to the Wake Forest fans:

‘I’m a Tar Hell born. I’m a Tar Heel bread. And when I die I’m a Tar Heel dead.”

The Deacon, Wake’s cheerleaders, alumni, and students will all chant in unison to the Carolina players and fans:

“If God is not a Tar Heel, then why is the sky Carolina blue?”

And Carolina hero quarterback Drake Maye will drive the Deacon motorcycle out of the stadium with his index finger up signaling “Carolina is number one.”
