Boston College went 19-34 overall and 5-25 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Last week’s MLB draft gave the program some good news to take with them over the summer. Over the three days in Los Angeles, four members of the Eagles heard their names called by Major League teams. One was expected in Luke Gold, and last Monday in the fifth round, with pick number 147, Gold got the call from the Detroit Tigers.

What may have come as a surprise to some that follow BC baseball is that three more Eagles heard their names called on the final day of the draft. The four total is the most Boston College players drafted since 2018. Altogether, 86 Eagles have been called by MLB teams, 26 in the last eight years. The first player that was called on Tuesday was RHP Mason Pelio who was taken in the 12th round, number 363, by the Cincinnati Reds His career at BC can be described as an up-and-down one. As a freshman, Pelio was named to the All-ACC rookie team. Injuries and subpar performances have made it difficult for Mason to back up his freshman season. In his final spring with BC, Pelio’s numbers were a 1-3 record with an inflated ERA of 9.16. In 13 appearances, with six of them being starts, he went 18.2 innings, giving up 27 hits, and 25 runs, with 19 of those earned. He also gave up 20 BB, and 21 SO. Opponents hit .338 against him. While it can easily be said that these numbers should not get you drafted, it did in Pelio’s case. Mason left Boston College with 156 strikeouts in 177.2 innings. The Reds saw something they think they can use going forward. Time will tell if they are right. Pelio was on the Cape pitching for Bourne. He made six relief appearances totaling 11.1 innings with a 3.97 ERA, and 13 strikeouts.

In the 15th round with pick number 463, the Houston Astros took RHP Joe Mancini. For most of the spring, Mancini was the Friday night starter for the Eagles. Mancini had a 4-4 record with a 4.70 ERA. in 76.2 innings pitched, Mancini struck out 63 and walked 24. Teams hit .253 against him. His best outing came on May 6 at home vs Florida State. He would throw a complete game allowing five hits and two earned runs. He did not walk a hitter while striking out four. He would make 112 pitches in the effort. The Astros have been very good of late in being able to develop talent that they draft. Mancini could be another example of that practice.

Max Gieg was taken in the 18th round, number 583, by the Los Angeles Angels. He made 15 appearances including seven starts. Max finished with a 4-2 record, and a 2.78 ERA. In 22.2 innings pitched. Gieg allowed a .175 batting average against to go with 28 strikeouts, 14 hits, 11 runs, and seven earned. Max did walk 19 so throwing strikes will need to improve at the next level. Max was pitching on the Cape before the draft began. In eight relief outings for Cotuit, Max had a 2.40 ERA and 11 punchouts in 15 innings.

All four players still need to be signed by the teams that drafted them. Then, they will head out to the spring training sites for evaluation and possible minor league assignments. Who knows what is in store for these players. But the first step is over now that they have been drafted.
