The prior week in MLB was about a rookie pitcher making history, a starting pitcher in the National League was placed on the injured list, and a catcher will be out several weeks due to a wrist injury.

Los Angeles Angels Rookie Reid Detmers Tosses 12th No-Hitter in Franchise History

Los Angeles Angels rookie starting pitcher Reid Detmers was lights out in his last start and made history.

He tossed a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays.

He was the Angels’ first-round pick in 2020, making just his 11th start in the majors.

The stellar outing was his first complete game going back to his college days at Louisville.

Detmers is just the 25th rookie in MLB history to toss a complete-game no-hitter and the second Angels rookie to accomplish the feat, following Bo Belinsky in 1962.

He is the youngest Angels pitcher to throw a no-hitter, per ESPN Stats & Info.

This was the 12th no-hitter in franchise history and the first by an individual Angels pitcher since Jered Weaver in 2012.

Detmers struck out just two batters in the historic outing, the fewest in a no-hitter since Francisco Liriano in 2011, per Elias Sports Bureau.

Detmers entered the game with a career 6.33 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.

He is the only pitcher since 1913 to toss a no-hitter after the starting the game with a lifetime ERA above 6.00 in at least 40 career innings, per Stats By Stats.

This was the sixth time the Rays have been no-hit and the first occurrence since Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game in 2012.

Detmers had a memorable outing, and hopefully, it is a sign of bigger things to come for him in the future.

Los Angeles Dodgers Place Starting Pitcher Clayton Kershaw on Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the injured list with right SI joint inflammation, per a team announcement several days ago.

The Dodgers expect the injury to be short-term, per J.P. Hoornstra of the Orange County Register.

Inflammation in the SI joint, which is situated where the lower spine and pelvis connect, causes lower back pain.

Kershaw has dealt with back pain throughout his career.

Kershaw did undergo an MRI, which came back “normal” and revealed no structural damage, per Sarah Wexler of MLB.com.

The injury to Kershaw is significant as he started the 2022 season strong.

He posted a 1.80 ERA in 30 innings pitched (five starts) with 32 strikeouts, three walks issued, two home runs surrendered, a 225 ERA+, 2.26 FIP, and 0.73 WHIP.

Hopefully, Kershaw will return when he is eligible to come off the injured list.

New York Mets Catcher James McCann Out Six Weeks with Wrist Injury

According to a team announcement, New York Mets catcher James McCann will have surgery for a fractured left hamate bone and is expected to be out six weeks.

McCann had missed a game several days ago, which Mets manager Buck Showalter called “manageable” at the time.

He underwent an X-ray Friday, which revealed a more severe injury.

McCann has struggled at the plate this season, as he has posted a .196 batting average and .551 OPS in 21 games with two doubles, one home run, and six RBIs.

The Mets recalled catcher Patrick Mazeika in a corresponding move to fill McCann’s spot on the active roster.
