In the bottom half of the inning, Michael Quigley struck out two and retired the side in order. After two scoreless innings for the River Hawks, sophomore Zach Fortuna (Newburyport, Mass.) took over on the bump, and back-to-back walks tied the game at one before a groundout ended the inning.

The River Hawks’ offense struggled to get going but had a chance to take the lead in the fourth. Junior Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass.) was walked before advancing to third on two wild pitches. The junior was thrown out at home, trying to score on yet another wild pitch. Joshua Becker took over on the mound in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and got out of the inning with two pitches.

Genther was walked to open the seventh inning and advanced to third on a ground out and stolen base. Freshman Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) was then walked before Conor Kelly’s fly-out scored Genther, pushing the UMass Lowell advantage to 4-1. The Hawks answered as Brad Maycock’s solo shot in the bottom of the seventh made it a two-run game.

The River Hawks extended the lead in the eighth as Brandon Fish singled to left field to score senior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) for a 5-2 lead. Henry Funaro entered the game for the bottom of the eighth looking to preserve the lead for UMass Lowell.
