The USF Bulls finished up their home games last week against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Once again, the Bulls were unable to get all three facets of the ball together in a game. Maybe the only game that they did was against the Temple Owls. That was the last game that they won. USF was looking for just their third win this year. The team that they were facing was the Tulane Green Wave. The Green Wave only had one win coming into the game. This was a game that looked like on paper the Bulls should win. As we all know that is why we play the games and not just believe what we hear or see online. The last two games USF could use to salvage their season. Next week they will head to Orlando to play their in-state rival the UCF Golden Knights.
Yesterday’s game started just the way that the USF Bulls would have wanted. They took the ball and on their first drive scored a 24-yard touchdown via Kelley Joiner Jr. This is one of the only bright points for USF. The fans were all hoping that this was going to spark them to win. That unfortunately did not happen. The Green Wave went on a run of 45 unanswered points. What that means is USF failed to turn their drives into points. That, once again, tired out the defense. A Bulls defense that had some players in the secondary out. Just like in games past, USF defensive backs played too far off Tulane wide receivers. We have all been trying to figure out why that is. The Green Wave defense slowed down the Bulls’ rushing attack and that meant that quarterback Timmy McClain had to throw the ball.
McClain went 15/27 for 132 yards and one interception. He threw no touchdown passes. Both USF Bulls’ touchdowns came via the ground. The other would come at the end of the game via backup quarterback Cade Fortin. His rushing touchdown was for nine yards. This showed the one facet of the ball that the Bulls struggled with today and that was on offense. That led to the defense also struggling because of exhaustion. The Green Wave had 501 yards of total offense compared to the Bulls 297. USF went 7-18 on third-down conversions and 2-2 on fourth down. That just was not enough to put up more than 14 points. The Bulls also had five penalties while the Green Wave had none. Tulane also won the turnover battle as they turned the ball over once and the Bulls did it twice.
This is my call for a change on the defensive coordinator. The USF Bulls have struggled on defense all season. It will not get any better because they are playing a better team on black Friday. The Knights will be ready to play and beat the Bulls again. Hopefully, the Bulls can get all three facets of the ball in the game coming up in this short week. Jeff Scott must figure out something because if there is any chance to salvage the season it would be to beat the Knights. No matter what, there need to be some changes going into next year. This team has the talent to be a winner but not the right leadership. I am hoping they can keep the game close against UCF and pull it off in the end.
