This year Austin FC began playing in MLS. The club’s logo is green and will get a stadium in north-central Austin. Its shared proximity with the University of Texas is a perfect pipeline opportunity. In other words, they can do what the school has already done successfully. Cultivate talent. Other teams share cities with universities. But Austin has a major edge over other potential competing cities and or locations.

Austin is one of the coolest places you can currently live. The city was even declared a future boom town by Elon Musk. It has experienced major population growth. People want to move there. Some people play collegiate soccer. Aka an ideal situation for potential recruits that can be developed into talent.

Kobe Bryant spent his whole career improving his craft. The Hall of Famer wasn’t born arguably the best player ever. Regardless of the level, development is very important. Ideally, time is included in the process. Rushing often leads to short-term results and long-term headaches.

During the 2021 spring, Texas football spring game commentators mentioned patience. Or in some cases, lack thereof. After a few mistakes, the school arguably found an amazing head coach. As the commentators noted, reaching his full potential will require patience.  Fortunately, Bama football offers the perfect blueprint.

Following blueprints is significantly easier than starting from scratch. Historically the Longhorns have had success recruiting. This result has overlapped across multiple sports. If they can succeed in basketball and football then they can succeed in soccer. All the school has to do is follow the blueprint and Austin FC will indirectly benefit.

Currently, Austin FC is ranked 9th out of 13th in their conference. It will take time to develop a perennial winner. Thankfully they have an iconic collegiate program that they can benefit from. Replenishing can often determine a winner.  If you run out of resources, competing is very difficult.  Some strategists utilize factories. The University of Texas at Austin is capable of serving the same purpose.

Domestic soccer’s popularity has continued to increase in the United States. The country’s world cup highlights have helped. At the same time, MLS’s continued growth has been equally beneficial. A lot of obstacles still prohibit continued growth. A list of cliches includes the cost of youth travel soccer.  However, there is still an element that has been overlooked, NCAA soccer. The University of Texas can help resolve this issue. More importantly, it can help Austin FC succeed long term.
