BC Baseball Stunned in Eighth by No. 6 Notre Dame

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to No. 6 Notre Dame by scores of 5-2 and 13-9 at the Harrington Athletics Village. The BC Eagles were on the verge of claiming their first series win since the ACC opener in late February before the bullpen let an eight-run lead slip away in the eighth.

The Fighting Irish totaled 12 runs against four BC relievers to turn a 9-1 deficit into a 13-9 lead in the eighth, including home runs from Niko Kavadas and Zack Prajzner.

Graduate right-hander Alex Stiegler (Dallas, Texas) pitched a gem for the Eagles before turning the game over to the bullpen. Stiegler turned in seven innings of one-run ball; scattering six hits with three strikeouts to no walks.

In game one, junior right-hander Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) was in trouble immediately with the bases loaded and nobody out in the first. Notre Dame plated a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a delayed steal. Pelio (3-5), who gave up a single run in the second, finished his outing with four-straight shutout innings. He worked with runners on all game but held the Irish to just 1-for-12 with a runner in scoring position. Pelio struck out six, walked four, and allowed three runs on six hits.

Lefty John Bertrand (4-1) went 6.1 innings in the win for Notre Dame. He allowed two runs, both in the seventh, on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. Bertrand retired 12 in a row between a walk to load the bases in the second and a single in the sixth.

ND added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run to center by first baseman Niko Kavadas; his first of two on the day to push his total to 15.

Kohlepp’s day started with one away in the bottom of the seventh of game one. He allowed an inherited runner to score on a groundout but went the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and no baserunners allowed on the way to his second save of the season.
