Division play got started last weekend in America East. With four weeks left in the regular season, these division matchups will determine the four teams that will play for the America East championship in May. The race is now on to see who gets those spots once tournament time arrives. The other bit of good news for the league is the attention that is being paid to one member. Stony Brook (15-1) is coming off a sweep of Maryland-Baltimore County last weekend. They received some votes in the Collegiate Top-30 poll. The Seawolves also gained some votes in the NCBWA poll. Good news for a conference trying to make a splash come May. Here is what else is going on in America East baseball.

Besides Stony Brook, UAlbany had a good first weekend of division play as they took three out of four from UMass Lowell. In doing so, they now find themselves in first place in Division A with a 10-8 conference record. The Maine Black Bears were only able to play one of their scheduled four games with Hartford last weekend. Since games lost will not be made up, playing as many games as possible becomes very important. Binghamton also had a good first weekend as they took their series from NJIT. With the win, Binghamton has reached the .500 mark at 8-8.

The Seawolves are the story of last week. For the first time all season, they are a ranked team at #26 in the Collegiate Top-30 poll. They have a five-game winning streak heading into their series with NJIT next week. The Seawolves are third in the league in pitching with a staff ERA of 3.64, They have two shutouts and two saves to their credit. The defense has also been very helpful to the pitching staff with a fielding percentage of .970 which ties them for second in the league. They have turned the most double plays in the conference at 16 while committing the third-most errors in the league at 27. On offense, the team is hitting at a .258 clip. with 67 of their 211 hits begin for extra-bases. Their overall record of 19-8 is what’s getting them noticed.

Binghamton’s rise to the .500 mark may be more about their pitching than anything else. Two members of the staff find themselves in the top four of the individual pitching race. At the top of the list is Jack Collins with a 2-0 record in three starts. He has an ERA of 0.66 with a complete game and a shutout to his credit. He has allowed only two earned runs in 27 innings pitched this season with 23 strikeouts and 19 hits allowed in those innings. He has given up only five extra-base hits, all doubles. His running mate on the staff is Josh Kopcza who has a 1-1 record in three starts with a 2.00 ERA. He has allowed only four earned runs allowed in 18 innings so far. The walks to strikeouts ratio is excellent. Only two walks given up while striking out 17. If this team were to make the league playoffs, these two will be tough to beat.

The Player of the Week comes from Albany. Johnny Marti has a big weekend at the expense of UMass Lowell pitching. He had a slash line of .583/.563/.750 as the Great Danes took three of four from the Riverhawks at home. Marti drove in six runs in those four games. In game one of the series, Marti scored four of his seven runs in the series. He is eighth in the batting race with a .353 average and is on the first page of RBI with 21. It is the first weekly award for Marti.

Thomas Babails of Binghamton is the Pitcher of the Week. In a shutout victory over NJIT, Babails threw seven innings allowing five hits, zero for extra bases. He gave up no walks while fanning 10 Highlanders hitters. The win was Thomas’s first of the season. The complete game and shutout were also his first of the year. It is the first weekly award for him.

The Rookie of the Week is Drew Roberts of UMBC. In the series loss at the hands of Stony Brook, Roberts had a good series for himself. He went 7-for-14 in the four games, had three doubles, and scored three runs. His on-base percentage was .533. Roberts is third in the batting race with a .369 batting average slugging .508 with nine extra-base hits all of them doubles. He has started all 23 games for UMBC. This is his second straight weekly award.
