For Boston College, Cool TV Promos Set Stage for Flutie’s Miracle TD Pass to Phelan

Thirty-seven years ago, CBS sports broadcaster Brent Musberger told the viewing audience about three key shows we should tune into later that week: The Dukes of Hazard, Falcon Crest, and Dallas.

Most people didn’t follow Musberger’s advice and watch Dukes of Hazard and Falcon Crest because those shows didn’t really catch fire like Madonna, Billy Idol, and the Internet.

But Dallas did. Remember being all worked about who shot JR? The nation got all twisted up on that question even though JR was not a real person so it really wasn’t going to affect our actual lives.

But this is not a critical analysis of TV shows of several yesteryears ago. It’s about what happened after those broadcast teases aired.

Trailing Miami 45-41 with under a minute left, Boston College drove down the field. Quarterback Doug Flutie stood under center at the 48-yard line of the Hurricanes, rolled back, then swerved out to this right to avoid the defensive end’s pressure.

Then he heaved the pigskin 60 yards in the air.

“I don’t believe it,” said Musberger. “Phelan is at the bottom of the pile. There is no time left on the clock.”

Gerald Phelan caught the “Hail Mary” pass from Flutie, and that was the greatest moment in Boston College sports history. Game over: Eagles 47-45.

A gigantic pile-up in the end zone followed. One player lifted Phelan on his shoulders. Pandemonium broke out. History was made. For infinity, this play would be replayed thousands of times to Boston College undergraduates and alumni spread across the United States and beyond.

Flutie went wild that day, completing 34 of 46 passes for 472 yards and 3 touchdowns.

“The key was my conversation with Boston College graduate and motivational Erik Weihenmayer last night in my hotel room,” said Flutie. “He told me to believe in myself and my ability to make a last-minute TD pass. It was all mental preparation and the visualization techniques he taught me. I saw myself throwing that pass for a touchdown and it happened. Thank goodness for the Boston College alumni network.”
