HOUSTON – HBU will open the 2021 season with a three-game series Saturday through Monday against Rice at Reckling Park. Saturday’s and Sunday’s games are slated 12:30 first pitch, with Monday’s finale scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start. All three games can be heard on KKME Digital Radio with Russ Reneau.

The Huskies are expected to send sophomore righthander Tyler Zarella, senior righthander Jacob Coats, and junior lefthander Austin Spinney to the mound.

HBU returns seven starting position players: junior catcher Todd Jackson, senior second baseman Trent Franson, senior shortstop Nathan Soriano, junior third baseman Jake Miller, junior left fielder Christian Dumont, senior centerfielder Chase Talbot and senior right fielder Brandon Bena. Bena is a Preseason All-Southland Conference selection and was an all-conference second-team pick in 2019.

Rice will counter with right-handers Mitchell Holcomb, Blake Brogdon, and Roel Garcia.

Cade Edwards, Bradley Gneiting, Justin Collins, and Brayden Combs each started at least 10 games for the Owls during last year’s shortened season.

HBU finished last season 6-11, but won four of its last five, while Rice finished 2-14.
