Eagles Drop 81-65 Decision at home to N.C. State

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Jay Heath scored 20 points, leading four Boston College players in double figures in an 81-65 home loss to N.C. State on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles were coming off a three-week span between games due to coronavirus shutdown and played with six scholarship players available.

Calling on five walk-ons – affectionately known as “the Martians” – and playing for the first time since Jan. 16, the Eagles scored the first two baskets of the game before giving up 37 of the next 40 points.

The Eagles missed 12 straight shots over a span of more than nine minutes before Heath hit a 3-pointer with five minutes left in the half to make it 37-11. BC was 8 for 28 from the field in the first half, and 4 for 18 from 3-point range.

Steffon Mitchell added 14 points and seven rebounds, while CJ Felder had 12 points, six boards, and three blocks.  Rich Kelly added 11 points, three boards, two assists, and two steals.  Walk-on Andrew Kenny saw 18 minutes of action, adding six points, four rebounds, and an assist.

Jay Heath scored 20 points and Steffon Mitchell scored 14 points with seven rebounds for Boston College (3-11, 1-7). Five walk-ons — dubbed the Martians for the green jerseys they usually wear in practice — appeared in the game, with Andrew Kenny playing 18 minutes and hitting a pair of late 3-pointers.

N.C. State won the previous matchup with BC by three points, 79-76, on Dec. 30 in Raleigh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Jay Heath notched his third 20-point performance of the season.  The sophomore guard was 7-of-9 inside the arc in 36 minutes of play.
  • Steffon Mitchell made two 3-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the foul line on the night.
  • CJ Felder registered his eighth game with at least three blocks this season.
  • Rich Kelly posted his eighth game of the season in double digits. He has scored 10 or more points in 63 of his 103 career games.
  • Kamari Williams made his first start of the season, scoring two points and grabbing a rebound in 25 minutes.
  • Andrew Kenny played 18 minutes, knocking down two 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds and an assist.
  • Luka Kraljevic made his first appearance on the court since Nov. 30, 2020 vs. St. John’s.  He played six minutes on the afternoon.
  • Jonathan Noel played five minutes, dishing out an assist.
  • Sam Holtze logged a steal in three minutes of action.
  • Will Jackowitz recorded a rebound and a steal in four minutes,
  • Quinn Pemberton made his first BC appearance, playing six minutes.
  • BC connected on 39.0% from the floor (23-59), but shot 48% (15-31) in the second half.
  • N.C. State’s pressure played a part in forcing 15 turnovers.  The Wolfpack had 23 points off turnovers on the afternoon.

STAT OF THE GAME:

  • 34 – BC attempted 34 3-pointers – second-most in a game this season.  The Eagles made nine.

  • Steffon Mitchell led Boston College in efficiency, with a mark of 16.
  • Two other Eagles – CJ Felder and Jay Heath – reached double digits at 15 and 13, respectively.
