This is not a moment, this is a movement!

With basketball conference play set to begin this weekend, America East, its member institutions and men’s and women’s basketball programs are reasserting their commitment to helping end racial inequality and promote social justice with the rolling out of an End Racism movement that will be an integral part of #AEHoops play this season.

Building on the foundation of the conference’s longstanding Spread Respect initiative, the campaign will focus on anti-racism and social justice education with the goal of enacting change to end systemic racism in America East communities and beyond.

“Our basketball coaches and student-athletes have stepped up and chosen to make this crucial movement a priority this season,” said America East Commissioner, Amy Huchthausen. “It is so important to foster thought and conversation around racism and equality every day and with basketball being so high-profile for us, we will be able to do that throughout this season and beyond.”

A coalition of America East men’s and women’s basketball coaches and student-athletes are members of the conference’s End Racism Working Group, which offers ideas and solutions aimed at achieving the campaign’s goals. Each program will also appoint an Anti-Racism captain to help initiate dialogue and activism within their team. Along with ‘End Racism’, key messages that will be featured throughout the season include ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Be an Ally’.

Original content will be featured in school ESPN productions all season long as well as across all America East and school platforms. The presence will be felt in the arena as well with coordinated LED and static signage as well as America East teams donning this year’s Spread Respect patch on select uniforms.

“There’s systemic racism everywhere,” said UAlbany women’s basketball student-athlete, Kyara Frames. “The more we run from it, the less progress we’ll make. One game doesn’t represent how far we have to go and having an entire season where everyone is unified will emphasize that point.”

“Our conference remains fully committed to being an industry leader by raising awareness and providing education around discrimination, social justice, diversity, and inclusion,” said Huchthausen.

America East is steadfast in its commitment to ending racial inequality. The conference has taken several actionable steps towards combating discrimination, including making Nov. 3, 2020, Election Day, a mandatory day off from athletic activities, and establishing a Spread Respect Advisory Group, which is addressing systemic racial injustice and inequality and its direct impact on those within the conference.

About America East: The America East provides its member schools, and their athletic programs a platform upon which student-athletes can achieve both collegiate and life success through the promotion and nurturing of athletic excellence, academic achievement and leadership, on and off the field.
