Lowell Spinners Picks Up 40th Win In Victory Over Connecticut
NORWICH, CT – After falling to Tri-City the night before, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox and 2019 Stedler Division Champion were looking to bounce back with a win in Connecticut.
Thanks to a big three-run eighth inning and some strong pitching out of the bullpen by Osvaldo De La Rosa, they were able to do so – defeating the Connecticut Tigers, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, by a final of 4-2 at Dodd Stadium on Saturday night.
Going into the top of the seventh, the Spinners (40-34) trailed the Tigers (34-40) 2-0. Roldani Baldwin led the inning off with a single to right field and, after moving up on two groundouts, scored on a single up the middle by Matthew Lugo.
The single was Lugo’s first hit at the Single-A level and first since being called up from the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Thursday.
The eighth inning, however, was when the fireworks really happened as Lowell struck for three runs in the frame alone. After Luke Bandy led the inning off with his second double of the contest, he moved up to third base on a wild pitch and later scored on a single by Antoni Flores, who moved up to second base on a single by Wil Dalton.
Flores later scored on a sacrifice fly Baldwin and Dalton would score on a wild pitch, giving the Spinners the lead 4-2.
Jay Groome got the start on the mound for Lowell, going two innings in his third start since returning from Tommy John Surgery. He allowed one run (earned) on three hits. He also racked up three strikeouts, while walking one.
While Groome was charged with a no-decision it was the late bullpen arms that took the cake in the game. De La Rosa was credited with the win – his fifth on the season – and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, while also tallying three strikeouts.
With the performance, De La Rosa increased his scoreless streak to 6.1 innings over his last four games.
Kris Jackson picked up the save – his eighth in Lowell and ninth overall – after tossing a one-hit, shutout ninth inning to put the nail on Connecticut’s coffin.
