Eagles Visit No. 19 FSU in Martin’s Final Season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Boston College is back on the road to take on No. 19 Florida State for a three-game series at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The action gets underway Friday at 6 p.m., while all three games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
About the Eagles…
Boston College is 12-12 overall after falling on the road to Connecticut on Wednesday. The Eagles are 3-6 in ACC play and have picked up top-25 wins over No. 8 Louisville (3/10) and No. 20 Clemson (3/24). Freshman outfielder Sal Frelick is BC’s top hitter; leading the team in batting average (.378), RBI (19), slugging percentage (.567), walks (11), on-base percentage (.453) and stolen bases (13). Freshman second baseman Cody Morissette is hitting .326 with a team-high seven doubles to go with 17 runs scored. Senior third baseman Jake Alu, who has leadoff in each of the last three games, is hitting .326 with five doubles and four home runs. Senior left-handed pitcher Dan Metzdorf gets the ball on Friday night. He is 2-2 with a 3.33 earned run average and 21 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.
Scouting the Seminoles…
Florida State is 17-7 overall, 5-4 in the ACC and peaks at No. 19 in the polls. Third baseman Drew Mendoza is a .293 hitter with a team-leading eight home runs with 23 RBI and a .659 slugging percentage. Designated hitter Robby Martin is the Seminoles top hitter at .341 with a team-leading 11 doubles and 24 RBI. Lefty Drew Parrish pitches in the Friday night role for FSU and is 3-1 with a 4.78 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 32 innings. Center fielder J.C. Flowers owns has not allowed a run in 8.2 innings and has notched five saves as the closer with 10 strikeouts. Florida State head coach Mike Martin is in his 40th and final year at the helm of the program. The NCAA’s all-time leader in wins has 2,005 in his career.
All-Time vs. FSU…
Florida State leads the all-time series, 35-4, with all games played in Boston College’s ACC era. The two sides have met for 37 regular season games and two ACC Championship contests. The Eagles are 3-15 all-time in Tallahassee and won the series opener, 8-5, in 2017.
Last Time They Met…
The Eagles were swept by the Seminoles at home last season beginning with an 11-inning, 13-12 game at the Harrington Athletics Village. Boston College overcame an 8-1 deficit in the middle of the fifth; outscoring Florida State, 9-2 through the ninth inning as Anthony Maselli tied the game with a two-run double in the ninth. FSU put three runs on the board in the top half of the 11th, but BC rallied for two in the bottom half; getting the tying run to third. Game two served as the Eagles’ annual ALS Awareness Game and was played at Fenway Park in front of 5,433 fans.

Jake Alu: Went 2-for-5 with three runs and got the win in a scoreless-inning, stranding two (3/10/17)… Jack Cunningham: .357 (5-for-14) in four games and three starts with a three-hit, four-RBI game (4/20/18)… Brian Dempsey: .333 (5-for-15) in six starts with a .474 OBP.
Against the Ranked…
The Eagles are 2-4 against ranked opponents this season having defeated No. 8 Louisville (3/10) and No. 20 Clemson (3/24). The win over the Cardinals marked BC’s first win over a ranked team and first over a ranked team on the road since defeating No. 21 Virginia (3/16/18). Boston College has picked up two wins vs. ranked teams in each of the last three seasons and went 10-9 vs. the ranked in 2016.
Freshman Impact…
The five BC freshman hitters have combined to hit .335 (89-for-266) with 48 runs scored and 39 driven in. Five freshman pitchers have accounted for 59.2 (34.9%) of BC’s 207 innings pitched. RHP Joe Mancini is 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 24.2 innings with opponents hitting .271. RHP Mason Pelio (3-1, 2.15) tossed seven innings of one-run ball at EKU (3/2) to become the first BC freshman to pitch seven or more and allow one run or less since Jacob Stevens vs. Louisville (4/22/16).
