Texas A&M Aggies: Jimbo gets debut victory

Jimbo Fisher got his dream start at Kyle Field this past weekend as the Aggies steamrolled over Northwestern State 59-7.

The Aggies of Texas A&M looked refreshed and full of life on both ends of the field this past weekend. New head coach, Jimbo Fisher, saw his offense work to perfection with Kellen Mond under center. Running back Trayveon Williams ran the best game of his life. Mond and tight end Jace Sternberger looked in sync all night. Fisher’s pro-style offense is off to a good start in Aggieland.

While the offense was working its magic, the defense also showed up to play. While last season was a horrendous year on defense, the Aggies are off to a better start on that end this season. Though the Aggies recorded zero sacks, they managed to hold the Demons to only seven points. A balanced defense from top to bottom played a great first game together.

However, if the Aggies expect to beat the likes of Clemson next Saturday, the defense must improve their discipline. Otaro Alaka and Donovan Wilson are two veterans of this defense. Yet, both found themselves ejected for targeting calls during the game. A&M will need all hands on deck if they expect to pull off the major upset on Clemson.

On offense, the Aggies looked great playing against lesser competition. Kellen Mond was 17/25 with 184 passing yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. The story of the night was running back Trayveon Williams running the Demons out the building. Williams went for 240 yards on 20 carries, and two touchdowns. On the first touchdown, Williams ran for 73 yards. This was by far William’s best night of his Aggie career.

Indeed, it was a good way to start off the Jimbo Fisher era in Aggieland. However, the brutal and early start to the Aggies season is only getting started. First up, Clemson. Wow. What a start. Following that, a Week 4 meeting with the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide.

In fact, this is among the most brutal schedule starts to an Aggie football season. The Aggies have also not fared well against tough competition. The Aggies have not defeated Alabama since the famous victory in 2012. But, before they can even think of upsetting the national champs, they first must test themselves against the Tigers. That within itself is no easy task.

So, for now, enjoy the first victory Aggieland. Because the season is about to get much harder. Let’s see how Jimbo’s players respond to the pressure of playing a top 5 opponent and perennial contender. But it is nice to have some buzz around this team that is considered positive.

As long as the Aggies play hard, grind on both sides of the field, and maintain their composure, it should be a relatively successful season in College Station.
