Weekend Preview

Scouting the Panthers

  • The Panthers enter the series with the Eagles with a 15-10 record but have won just two of seven road games in 2018.
  • Pitt is coming off a series win against Virginia, taking two of three at home. After dropping the first game, 10-7, the Panthers came back to beat the Cavaliers, 7-5, and 4-1.
  • The Panthers lost 2-1 series to Duke and at Virginia Tech and were swept at North Carolina to compile a 4-8 ACC record.
  • They are on a three-game win streak after defeating Youngstown State, 9-5, on Tuesday.
  • Pitt is 10th in the ACC with a .257 team batting average, ninth with a 4.32 team ERA and third with a .976 fielding percentage.
  • The Panthers are led by Liam Sabino, who has a .341 batting average, 31 hits, seven home runs and 13 stolen bases. He is second on the team with 21 RBIs – Frank Maldonado is first with 23 – and second with 21 walks – David Yanni is first with 22. Sabino’s .670 slugging percentage is second in the ACC and his .461 on-base percentage is seventh.
  • Pitt has not announced the Friday starter. On Saturday, RHP Matt Pidich will throw. In seven starts, he has a 3-1 record with a 3.48 ERA. Over 41.1 innings, he has allowed 42 hits, 17 runs – 16 earned – and walked just nine while striking out 42. In his last outing, he went 6.2 against the Cavs, allowed 10 hits, five runs – four earned – struck out five and walked two in a no-decision.
  • Sunday starter RHP Blair Calvo is 1-1 with a 4.07 ERA in seven starts. Over 24.1 innings, he has allowed 25 hits, 12 runs – 11 earned – 14 walks and 27 Ks. He picked up the win against UVA, throwing five scoreless, allowing just two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

THE SERIES

  • The 2018 series is just the third time Boston College and Pittsburgh will meet since the Panthers joined the ACC in 2014.
  • Pitt has won both series matchups. In both meetings, BC won the first game before Pitt won the next two to take the series win.
  • The Panthers last visited Boston College in 2014, their first year in the ACC.
  • In the six ACC meetings, three games have been decided by one run with the Panthers winning two of them. They also own the only shutout, a 5-0 victory in the second game of the series in 2016.
  • Overall, Pitt has collected 10 wins at The Heights as the two squads were old BIG EAST rivals.
  • Senior Jake Palomaki has collected six hits in 13 at-bats against Pitt to lead the Eagles.
  • Junior RHP Jacob Stevens collected a win in his start in 2016, going five innings, allowing just two hits, one run, three walks and striking out five.

WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE EAGLES

  • Senior Jake Palomaki is second in the ACC with a .373 batting average. He has reached base safely in the 24 of BC’s 26 games this season. He continues to move up the BC records list. His 135 career walks are first, his .433 career on-base percentage is fifth, the 52 career stolen bases are second, his 133 runs scored is tied for eighth and he has reached base safely 336 times in his BC career, third all-time.
  • Junior LHP Dan Metzdorf struck out a career-high 13 over eight innings against Virginia Tech on March 24 and then tallied nine Ks at No. 12 Clemson on March 30. The southpaw has recorded 22 Ks over 12.2 innings.
  • Junior RHP Thomas Lane has inherited 16 runners in his 14 appearances out of the bullpen. None have scored. He is second on the bullpen staff 16 Ks and has the lowest opponent batting average on a staff of just .151.
  • Freshman Chris Galland leads ACC with 16 stolen bases. He is perfect on the base path and is tied for 15th in the nation. His 0.64 stolen bases/game is first in conference and 12th nationally.
  • Sophomore Jack Cunningham has a hit in 17 in 23 games played.
  • Junior Gian Martellini leads the ACC with 11 runners caught stealing. He has reached base safely in the last 13 games played and has at least one hit in five of the last six games, including tying a career high with three hits at No. 12 Clemson on March 30.
  • Sophomore Brian Dempsey has at least one hit in 19 of the Eagles’ 26 games this season and in 33 of the last 46 games played, dating back to last year. He also reached base safely in the 24 of the 26 games this season.
  • Sophomore Jake Goodreau made his first career start behind the plate in Wednesday’s game against Harvard. He doubled, drew two walks and tallied his first career RBI.
  • Junior RHP Sean Hughes leads the BC bullpen with a 0.90 ERA. He recorded a career-high three strikeouts against Harvard on April 4, striking out the side. In 13 appearances, he has struck out 15 with just two earned runs.
  • Junior RHP Jacob Stevens‘ 3.90 career ERA is ninth in BC record books and his 186 career strikeouts rank eighth.
