UMBC Hoops Team Stuns and Uplifts a Nation
They said it would never happen. You had no chance. History was against you. Forget about it. Play the game, take your loss, do what’s expected, and go home quietly. You’re not that good of a basketball team.
This was the situation when the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, a 16th seed, took the court against #1 seed Virginia last night during the March Madness basketball tournament.
There was no way they could win. Virginia’s defense was regarded as the best in the nation. They won the Atlantic Coast Conference by four games proving superiority over powerhouses Duke and North Carolina. This was Virginia’s year to go all the way to the Final Four. Many predicted they would win the national championship.
So forget about it, University of Maryland- Baltimore County.
Not so fast. In one of the most surprising turn of events in the history of the tournament, the underdogs not only beat Virginia. They blew them out of the building, 74-54.
Wow!
For this team and school, this achievement is basketball bliss. Forever they will be remembered as the first 16 seed to take out a number 1 seed in this tournament. Can you imagine the emotions these winners are feeling this morning?
Yesterday most people in America had never heard of University of Maryland- Baltimore County. Today this school is the lead story for all national sports media outlets and a household name in conversations in houses across this country. Their performance in one basketball game put them on the national map. We will never forget the time they beat powerful Virginia in the first round.
It is the biggest win in the history of the school in any sport at any time. It is the most amazing accomplishment by any of its sports teams and arguably the biggest upset in the history of March Madness.
Less than two months ago, UMBC lost to Albany 83-39.
Tonight, it pulled the biggest upset in college basketball history.

Imagine being one of those players on that team. Yesterday they were basically unknown to almost everyone. Today they are coast-to-coast rock stars. The nation is interested in who they are. This is unusual because this is not a major basketball school. This is a humble place that now has shot into the stratosphere of national notoriety – overnight.
Their accomplishment is an inspiration to all those people who every day face obstacles and doubters. This team has proven that no matter how unlikely the odds, it is possible to achieve a goal if you work hard and believe in yourselves. This basketball team has shown us how to overcome rejection, to shun criticism, and go out and prove everybody wrong. What a nice gift they have given to the world. We are all uplifted by this basketball team’s accomplishment. There is hope for all of us that whatever we want to achieve – no matter how difficult – we can achieve it. Dreams do come true.
Thank you, University of Maryland Baltimore County basketball players. You have energized an entire nation.
