Kruger Rips Oklahoma Players For Disastrous End to Season

In the locker room yesterday after Oklahoma’s loss to Rhode Island in the NCAA March Madness tournament, coach Lon Kruger addressed his team.

“Justice prevails,” he said. “Everybody thought we were going to lose because nobody thought we should have made this tournament because we lost 11 of our last 15 games, didn’t win an away game in 2018, and finished the season with one of the worst records (18-13) of any team to make the tournament.

“The truth is we deserved to lose today because we’re a very bad basketball team and have been for months. Everyone in the country knows it. I know it. And you know. Heck, you’re the players. You know how bad you have been playing. You know how bad and untalented you are. It’s unbelievable how inept you guys are at shooting. How can you expect to win any basketball games when you miss as many shots as you guys do? Man, you are bad shooters.

“We had it going on for a while this season, but things got away from us. We went from one of the nation’s best teams to a team that nobody respected and everybody knew could be beaten night after night. We had bad team chemistry and I blame that on your immature personalities. You guys need to grow up.

“Trae Young, you were a great scorer and passer but you were a ball hog and took way too many 30 foot shots that badly missed. And your turnovers were absurd, not just how many you made but how you made them. You would drive down the lane and pass the ball to the other team time and time again. It was basketball absurdity. I couldn’t get you to stop doing that because everybody in the country was fascinated that you were a freshman and leading the nation in scoring and assists. I lost control of you as a player and lost control of the team and our season spiraled out of control into a deep abyss.

“All of the critics were right. We shouldn’t have been invited to this tournament. We stunk throughout the second half of the season. Everybody beat us. I wish we were not invited because we wouldn’t have had to come and lose to Rhode Island in the first round and get even more people saying we didn’t deserve the bid. Can you imagine how irate Oklahoma State players are that they didn’t make this tournament but we did yet they whipped us twice? What justice is there in that? We found out first hand how and why Okie State was a much better basketball team than us and yet we had the nerve to take our bid and play in this tournament game and they didn’t get invited. The right thing to do would have been to not accept the bid. We should have told the NCAA Selection Committee that we knew we’re a sorry basketball team and that others were more deserving and so we were not going to accept the bid. But instead, we took the bid because our university administrators wanted us to because the school got paid some serious money for making the field. Money got in the way of sound reasoning as it often does. I wish we never even played in this game today because we have embarrassed our university and overall student body. We were undeserving and proved it by the way we played.”

Star player Trae Young raised his hand.

“What do you have to say, Trae, you ball hog?” said Kruger

“Coach,” he said, “I think you did one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of college basketball. You had a superstar on your team – me – and couldn’t figure out how to get this team to play better together. There have been plenty of other March Madness teams that have done well in this tournament with star players such as Larry Bird and Danny Manning.

“But you couldn’t figure out how to use my superstar abilities in a way that helped us win games. We kept losing and losing and you couldn’t figure out what to do to get us winning again. What’s wrong with you, coach? Are you not good at your job? Are you not used to having a player as great as me on your team? Are you intimidated by greatness because you are not anything close to great? I blame our disastrous season on you. You’re the leader of this team. We sucked and it’s your fault.”

Kruger said: “Go on to the pros, Trae, and make your millions of dollars. We will do better next year without your dribbling all the time and shooting 40-foot bombs that don’t even hit the rim. You thought you were a big shot because everybody was telling you that you were. But you ruined our season. Yes, you’re an All-American but you are a selfish player. This team will be better next year without your nation-leading 27 points per game and 8 assists. We don’t need players as talented as you to get where we need to go.”

Kruger then told his team to gather around him to say one final, season-ending prayer.

“Everybody grab a hold of a teammate’s hand,” he said. “We’re in this together as one team as we have been all season.”
