The Oklahoma Sooners entered Gainesville looking for answers after another difficult week. Meanwhile, the Florida Gators hoped to regain momentum following their loss to Georgia. However, Oklahoma delivered a convincing 23-7 victory Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Sooners controlled the clock, dominated third downs, and frustrated Florida’s offense throughout the evening. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer delivered two touchdown passes and avoided costly turnovers.
Meanwhile, Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. struggled against an aggressive Sooners defense. The victory improved Oklahoma to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Southeastern Conference play. Florida dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in conference action. Additionally, the loss marked Florida’s fourth defeat in five games after opening the season with four consecutive victories.
Oklahoma Takes Control Early
Oklahoma entered the contest with significant changes to its offensive coaching staff. Head coach Brent Venables fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and promoted tight ends coach Jason Witten to interim coordinator. The former Dallas Cowboys star immediately helped Oklahoma establish a more consistent offensive approach. Mateer connected with tight end Rocky Beers for a 41-yard gain during Oklahoma’s opening possession. The Sooners eventually settled for a 41-yard field goal from Tate Sandell.
Oklahoma continued attacking Florida’s defense during its second possession. Facing fourth-and-one from its own 46-yard line, Oklahoma made an aggressive decision. Running back Lloyd Avant took a direct snap and gained four yards for a crucial first down. That conversion helped Oklahoma sustain an impressive 15-play, 84-yard touchdown drive. Mateer eventually found former Florida tight end Hayden Hansen for a touchdown. The score gave Oklahoma a 10-0 advantage and put additional pressure on Florida’s struggling offense.
Florida’s Offense Struggles to Respond
Florida entered the matchup hoping Jones could provide another spark at quarterback. Jones previously helped the Gators defeat Texas and replaced Aaron Philo during their loss against Georgia. However, Oklahoma’s defense prevented Jones from establishing a consistent rhythm. The Sooners pressured Florida’s passing attack and limited opportunities for explosive plays. Jones completed 10 of 22 passes for 133 yards and threw two interceptions.
Running back Jaden Baugh also encountered considerable resistance against Oklahoma’s defensive front. Baugh finished with 35 rushing yards on eight carries. Nevertheless, he delivered Florida’s biggest offensive highlight with a 15-yard touchdown run. Baugh raced toward the sideline before diving toward the pylon for Florida’s only touchdown. Unfortunately, the Gators couldn’t build additional momentum from that scoring play. Oklahoma’s defense ultimately limited Florida to 203 total yards. The Sooners also held the Gators to nine first downs.
Oklahoma’s Defense Makes the Difference
Florida entered halftime trailing 13-7 after Sandell connected on a 48-yard field goal. The Gators still had opportunities to take control during the second half. However, Oklahoma’s defense delivered several game-changing plays. Florida threatened to score during the third quarter, but defensive back Courtland Guillory delivered a crucial interception. Jones attempted a fourth-down pass toward the end zone, hoping to give Florida the lead. Instead, Guillory made a diving interception that preserved Oklahoma’s six-point advantage.
That defensive stand represented one of the evening’s biggest turning points. Florida had an opportunity to change the game’s momentum but failed to capitalize. Linebacker Owen Heinecke also played an important role in Oklahoma’s defensive success. The Sooners consistently pressured Jones and prevented Florida from establishing its rushing attack. Oklahoma’s defense forced Florida into difficult situations throughout the second half.
Oklahoma Delivers the Knockout Punch
Oklahoma’s most impressive possession came late in the third quarter and continued deep into the fourth. The Sooners assembled a remarkable 20-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that consumed nearly 13 minutes. Mateer repeatedly converted important third downs to keep Florida’s defense on the field. Meanwhile, Avant contributed valuable rushing yards and helped Oklahoma control possession. The drive eventually reached Florida’s six-yard line with less than five minutes remaining. Mateer rolled toward his right before finding Isaiah Sategna for a six-yard touchdown.
Florida defensive back Ben Hanks III nearly intercepted the pass. However, the football slipped past his outstretched hands and reached Sategna. The touchdown extended Oklahoma’s lead to 20-7 with 4:56 remaining. More importantly, the lengthy possession drained valuable time and eliminated Florida’s realistic comeback opportunities. Sandell later added another field goal, completing Oklahoma’s 23-7 victory. Mateer finished with 207 passing yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Florida Faces More Questions
Florida’s disappointing performance created additional concerns about its offensive consistency. Head coach Jon Sumrall entered the matchup hoping his team could recover from its recent struggles. Instead, the Gators suffered another frustrating loss against an SEC opponent. Florida managed only seven points, its lowest scoring output since the 2022 Las Vegas Bowl. The Gators struggled to sustain possessions and failed to capitalize on important opportunities. Furthermore, their offensive line struggled to provide consistent protection for Jones.

Florida also failed to establish Baugh as a dependable offensive weapon throughout the contest. Oklahoma’s defensive front limited his effectiveness outside his touchdown run. The loss also prevented Florida from securing its sixth victory and bowl eligibility. With three regular-season games remaining, the Gators must find answers quickly. Florida’s playoff hopes also disappeared following another conference defeat. The Gators now face considerable pressure to finish their season on a positive note.
Oklahoma Finds New Life Under Jason Witten
For Oklahoma, Saturday’s victory represented more than another conference win. The Sooners finally demonstrated the offensive consistency that had eluded them throughout much of the season. Witten’s first game calling plays produced several encouraging developments. Oklahoma scored on three of its four first-half possessions and finished with more than 350 offensive yards. Additionally, the Sooners converted 10 of 18 third-down opportunities. Florida converted only nine first downs throughout the entire contest.
Venables also watched his defense respond following Oklahoma’s disappointing loss against South Carolina. The Sooners tackled effectively, created turnovers, and controlled the line of scrimmage. Oklahoma now returns home to face Ole Miss in another important SEC matchup. The Sooners will look to build momentum and move closer to bowl eligibility. Meanwhile, Florida must regroup following another disappointing performance inside The Swamp. Saturday’s defeat highlighted the significant offensive problems that continue to trouble the Gators. Ultimately, Oklahoma executed its game plan better and controlled the biggest moments. The Sooners left Gainesville with a convincing victory and renewed confidence heading into the season’s final stretch.
