Eight weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the league has delivered plenty of surprises, disappointments, and unexpected contenders. Some preseason predictions look brilliant, while others have completely fallen apart. Meanwhile, several teams have challenged everything fans and analysts expected before opening kickoff. The Kansas City Chiefs remain dangerous, but their path toward another championship looks more complicated. The New England Patriots continue showing signs of progress, while the Chicago Bears have made significant noise. However, the Baltimore Ravens face serious questions, and the Dallas Cowboys continue frustrating their supporters. Additionally, the Minnesota Vikings have exceeded expectations, while several established contenders have struggled with consistency. Week 8 offered another reminder that preseason projections rarely survive an entire NFL schedule. So, what did we get right, and where did we completely miss the mark? Here are the biggest lessons through the first eight weeks of the 2026 season.
What We Got Right
The Kansas City Chiefs Remain a Serious Threat
One prediction that still makes sense involves the Kansas City Chiefs competing among the AFC’s strongest teams. Patrick Mahomes remains a quarterback nobody wants to face during the postseason. Additionally, Andy Reid continues giving Kansas City an advantage through his offensive creativity and experience. However, the Chiefs have also shown vulnerabilities against quality opponents. Denver defeated Kansas City 28-24 during Week 8, reminding everyone that the AFC West remains competitive. Nevertheless, dismissing Mahomes before January would represent a significant mistake.
The Buffalo Bills Can Still Compete with Anyone
Buffalo entered the season with considerable expectations surrounding Josh Allen and its championship aspirations. Through eight weeks, the Bills have demonstrated why those expectations remain reasonable. Buffalo dominated Baltimore 36-10 during Week 8, delivering one of its strongest performances. The Bills controlled the matchup and capitalized on Baltimore’s quarterback problems. Furthermore, Allen continues providing the explosive potential that makes Buffalo dangerous. However, the defense must maintain its consistency against stronger opponents. Buffalo has the talent to challenge anyone, but postseason success requires more than individual brilliance.
The NFC North Would Become Extremely Competitive
Anyone expecting a difficult NFC North race certainly had the right idea. Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, and Green Bay have all provided compelling storylines. The Vikings entered Week 8 without a loss before Detroit handed them a 19-15 defeat. Meanwhile, Chicago dominated Seattle 34-17, showing that the Bears deserve serious attention. Green Bay also defeated Carolina 27-19, adding another important victory to its season. Consequently, divisional matchups could determine playoff positioning throughout November and December.
Defense Still Wins Important Football Games
The NFL continues promoting explosive offenses, but strong defenses remain essential for winning meaningful games. Pittsburgh demonstrated that principle during its 27-6 victory over Cleveland. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay shut out Atlanta 16-0 despite failing to complete a pass. The Buccaneers dominated the ground game and controlled the matchup through physical football. Additionally, Detroit held Minnesota to 15 points during a crucial divisional victory. These performances remind everyone that defense still matters, regardless of offensive trends.

What We Got Wrong
The Minnesota Vikings Would Struggle to Compete
Minnesota has arguably delivered one of the season’s biggest surprises. The Vikings opened with six consecutive victories before Detroit finally handed them their first defeat. Their defense has consistently created problems for opposing quarterbacks. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores continues using aggressive pressure packages to disrupt opposing offenses. However, Minnesota’s offense still raises concerns. Quarterback Kyler Murray struggled against Detroit, while the Vikings managed just 266 total yards. Nevertheless, a 6-1 start represents a significant achievement. Minnesota has already proven that preseason doubts underestimated its ability to compete.
The Baltimore Ravens Would Dominate the AFC North
Baltimore entered the season with championship expectations surrounding Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. However, injuries have completely changed the team’s outlook. Jackson returned against Buffalo during Week 8 but injured his thumb on his first passing attempt. Tyler Huntley also suffered an injury, forcing Baltimore to turn toward Joe Fagnano. Consequently, the Ravens struggled offensively during their 36-10 defeat. Baltimore fell to 4-4, creating serious questions about its postseason chances. Furthermore, Jackson’s injury could significantly affect Baltimore’s remaining schedule. The Ravens still possess talented players, but their championship expectations now face enormous obstacles.
The Chicago Bears Would Need More Time
Chicago has emerged as one of the NFC’s most intriguing teams. Caleb Williams continues developing, while the Bears have demonstrated the ability to dominate quality opponents. Their 34-17 victory over Seattle during Monday Night Football provided another impressive statement. Chicago controlled the matchup and prevented Seattle from establishing offensive consistency. Additionally, the Bears have shown they can win through different approaches. Their improving defense gives Williams more opportunities to succeed without carrying every possession. Anyone expecting another disappointing season must reconsider that prediction. Chicago has become a legitimate playoff contender, although tougher challenges remain ahead.
The Dallas Cowboys Would Finally Find Consistency
Dallas entered another season hoping to silence critics and establish itself among the NFC’s strongest teams. Instead, the Cowboys have continued experiencing frustrating performances. Their Week 8 collapse against Arizona perfectly illustrated those problems. Dallas controlled much of the contest before surrendering a fourth-quarter comeback. Arizona eventually secured a 33-30 overtime victory, dropping Dallas to 3-5. Gardner Minshew helped revive the Cardinals’ offense, while Tyler Allgeier delivered several explosive rushing plays. Meanwhile, Dallas struggled to finish a game it appeared ready to win. The Cowboys still possess offensive talent, but defensive breakdowns continue undermining their progress.
The Jacksonville Jaguars Would Remain Inconsistent
Jacksonville entered the season with questions surrounding Trevor Lawrence and the team’s overall direction. However, the Jaguars have provided convincing evidence that they belong in the AFC playoff conversation. Their 42-7 destruction of Indianapolis during Week 8 demonstrated their potential. Lawrence threw three touchdowns and finished with 210 passing yards. Additionally, Jacksonville’s defense forced three turnovers and completely disrupted the Colts’ offense. Running back Bhayshul Tuten contributed 159 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. Jacksonville improved to 5-2, giving the franchise considerable momentum. The Jaguars have exceeded expectations, although maintaining their success remains the next challenge.
The Indianapolis Colts Would Challenge for the AFC South
Indianapolis entered the season hoping to compete behind quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor. However, the Colts have struggled to establish consistent offensive production. Their embarrassing defeat against Jacksonville exposed significant problems throughout the roster. Indianapolis managed just seven points while allowing 42. Furthermore, the Colts struggled defensively and failed to protect their quarterback consistently. Jones threw two interceptions, while Taylor managed only 23 rushing yards. Indianapolis fell to 2-6, leaving its playoff aspirations in serious trouble. Instead of challenging for the division, the Colts must evaluate their direction moving forward.
The Biggest Lessons Moving Forward
Eight weeks have revealed several important truths about the NFL. First, quarterback health remains one of the biggest factors determining championship opportunities. Baltimore provides the clearest example of how injuries can derail an otherwise talented roster. Meanwhile, Buffalo continues benefiting from Josh Allen’s ability to create explosive plays. Second, teams cannot rely exclusively on passing offenses. Tampa Bay proved that point by rushing for 324 yards against Atlanta. Baker Mayfield completed zero passes, yet the Buccaneers still secured a shutout victory. Third, the NFL continues rewarding teams that develop strong defensive identities. Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Detroit have demonstrated the importance of controlling opposing offenses. Finally, preseason expectations mean very little once teams begin playing meaningful games.
Minnesota has exceeded predictions, while Dallas and Indianapolis have struggled to meet theirs. The biggest remaining question involves which teams can maintain their momentum through the second half. Chicago and Jacksonville have opportunities to establish themselves as serious postseason threats. Meanwhile, Kansas City, Buffalo, and Cincinnati remain dangerous AFC contenders. Joe Burrow demonstrated Cincinnati’s offensive potential with six total touchdowns against Tennessee during Week 8. However, the Bengals also allowed 36 points and needed overtime to defeat the Titans. That performance highlighted both their explosive potential and defensive concerns.
Final Thoughts
The 2026 NFL season has already challenged plenty of preseason predictions. Some established contenders have delivered, while several unexpected teams have emerged as legitimate threats. The Vikings and Bears have exceeded expectations, while the Ravens and Cowboys have encountered serious adversity. Meanwhile, the Jaguars have demonstrated that they deserve greater respect. However, eight weeks cannot determine an entire season. Injuries, divisional matchups, and late-season momentum will continue reshaping the playoff picture. One thing remains certain: the NFL rarely follows anyone’s predictions. That unpredictability makes every Sunday interesting and keeps fans returning for more. As November begins, the biggest question concerns which early surprises will become lasting success stories. The next several weeks should reveal which teams truly belong among the championship contenders. And if the first eight weeks have taught us anything, expect several more predictions to fall apart.
