The South Florida Bulls return to the field Saturday, October 31, for an important American Conference showdown. The UAB Blazers visit Raymond James Stadium for a Halloween matchup that carries significant postseason implications. Both teams enter the contest following bye weeks, giving their coaching staffs additional preparation time. USF enters with a 5-2 overall record and a 1-2 conference mark. Meanwhile, UAB arrives at 4-3 overall and 2-1 in American Conference play. Kickoff starts at noon Eastern, with ESPNU carrying the game nationally. The Bulls will wear black uniforms for their Halloween Blackout celebration. Head coach Brian Hartline hopes his team can build momentum entering the final five games. However, UAB presents several challenges, especially with its impressive pass defense and improving conference record.
A Look Back at Previous Matchups
South Florida and UAB have developed an interesting rivalry since their first meeting in 2003. Saturday marks their sixth meeting, with the Bulls holding a 3-2 advantage in the series. USF has won the previous two meetings, including a convincing 48-18 victory during the 2025 season. The Bulls also defeated UAB 35-25 in 2024, continuing their recent success against the Blazers. South Florida earned another series victory during the 2004 season. However, UAB has demonstrated its ability to challenge the Bulls throughout their history. The Blazers will enter Tampa hoping to reverse their recent struggles against South Florida. For Hartline, previous results provide historical context, but Saturday presents an entirely different challenge. Both programs feature different personnel and coaching leadership from their previous meetings. Additionally, conference positioning gives this matchup extra importance as November approaches.
USF Looks to Rebuild Its Conference Momentum
The Bulls started their season with high expectations under first-year head coach Brian Hartline. However, consecutive conference losses against Temple and UTSA created unexpected challenges. Temple defeated USF 17-13 before UTSA handed the Bulls a 31-24 defeat. South Florida responded with a convincing 29-2 victory over Kent State on October 17. That performance helped restore confidence before the team’s scheduled bye week. Still, Hartline understands his offense must improve against stronger conference opponents. USF averages 329.4 offensive yards and 26.6 points per game. Those numbers highlight an offense that has struggled to maintain consistent production. Meanwhile, the Bulls have performed considerably better defensively. South Florida allows approximately 15.1 points per game, ranking among the nation’s best scoring defenses. The Bulls must combine that defensive strength with improved offensive execution to defeat UAB.
Michael Van Buren Jr. Leads the USF Offense
Quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. remains one of South Florida’s most important impact players. Through seven games, Van Buren has thrown for 1,292 yards and six touchdowns. Even more impressively, he has avoided throwing an interception this season. His 64.2% completion percentage demonstrates his ability to protect the football while managing the offense. However, Hartline wants his quarterback and receivers to create more explosive passing plays. Against Kent State, Van Buren completed 22 of 27 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, running back D.J. Crowther provides balance for South Florida’s offensive attack.
Crowther has rushed for 518 yards and seven touchdowns on 105 carries. His production could become especially important against UAB’s vulnerable rushing defense. Wide receiver Bryson Rodgers also deserves attention after collecting 334 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Cameron Seldon contributed 60 receiving yards and a touchdown against Kent State. Tight end Wyatt Sullivan gives Van Buren another potential target in critical situations. Together, these players must produce consistent drives and capitalize on scoring opportunities.

USF Defense Could Decide the Outcome
South Florida’s defense has provided stability throughout the season. The Bulls have limited opponents to approximately 325 yards per game while creating consistent pressure. Linebacker Grayson Howard provides leadership and physicality in the middle of the defense. Meanwhile, defensive lineman C.J. Hicks gives USF another important presence near the line of scrimmage. Safety Tavin Ward and defensive back Ayden Jackson also bring experience to the secondary. Their responsibilities become especially important against UAB quarterback Ryder Burton. South Florida has recorded 50 tackles for loss through seven games. However, Hartline wants his defense to generate more takeaways. The Bulls have recovered five fumbles but have intercepted only two passes this season. Both interceptions came during the season opener. Consequently, forcing Burton into mistakes could give USF valuable opportunities to control Saturday’s game.
UAB Enters Tampa With Confidence
The Blazers enter Saturday following one of their most dramatic victories of the season. UAB defeated East Carolina 30-17 in overtime on October 15. The Blazers trailed 17-9 with just over one minute remaining in regulation. However, quarterback Ryder Burton directed a remarkable 93-yard touchdown drive. Burton connected with Roderick Robinson II for a touchdown before UAB converted the tying two-point attempt. The Blazers then scored first in overtime before Delvon Gulley delivered the decisive defensive play. Gulley returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown, completing the comeback. Head coach Alex Mortensen hopes that performance provides momentum against another challenging conference opponent. Additionally, UAB enters with a better conference record than South Florida. The Blazers understand another victory would strengthen their position in the American Conference standings.
Impact Players to Watch for UAB
Quarterback Ryder Burton leads the Blazers with 1,184 passing yards and six touchdowns. However, Burton has also thrown five interceptions, creating opportunities for opposing defenses. His decision-making could become a major factor against South Florida’s aggressive defensive front. Running back Roderick Robinson II provides another important offensive weapon. Robinson has rushed for 436 yards on 101 carries this season. Meanwhile, wide receiver C.J. Smith leads UAB with 350 receiving yards on 19 receptions. Smith recorded eight receptions for 119 yards against East Carolina. His ability to create explosive plays could challenge USF’s secondary. Defensively, Delvon Gulley deserves attention following his game-changing interception against the Pirates. Special teams could also influence the outcome. Kicker Jonah Delange has converted 17 of 19 field-goal attempts this season. Meanwhile, punter Oliver Straw averages 45.9 yards per punt. Those specialists could prove valuable during a defensive battle.
Three Keys to Saturday’s Game
The first major factor involves South Florida’s rushing attack. UAB allows approximately 190 rushing yards per game, creating potential opportunities for Crowther. If USF establishes its ground game early, Van Buren could face more manageable passing situations. The second factor involves UAB’s outstanding pass defense. The Blazers lead the nation in passing yards allowed, surrendering just 126 yards per game. Therefore, South Florida cannot rely exclusively on its passing attack. Hartline must create offensive balance while avoiding predictable playcalling.
Finally, turnovers could determine which team controls the game. USF has protected the football exceptionally well through the air. However, Burton’s five interceptions suggest South Florida could create opportunities with defensive pressure. Both teams must also capitalize inside the red zone. USF has scored on 95.5% of its red-zone possessions this season. Meanwhile, UAB has allowed opponents to score on every red-zone opportunity. That contrast could become one of Saturday’s biggest advantages for the Bulls.
What’s at Stake for Both Programs?
South Florida enters Saturday needing one victory to reach six wins and become bowl eligible. A victory would also help the Bulls recover from their disappointing conference start. However, USF still faces difficult matchups against East Carolina, Memphis, Florida Atlantic, and Tulane. Those games will significantly influence the team’s postseason opportunities. Meanwhile, UAB hopes to continue climbing the American Conference standings. The Blazers already have two conference victories and could strengthen their position with another road win. Both coaching staffs understand the importance of maintaining momentum during the final month. For Hartline, Saturday represents another opportunity to demonstrate his program’s progress. For Mortensen, defeating South Florida would deliver an important conference road victory.
Final Prediction: USF 27, UAB 17
South Florida enters Saturday with several advantages, including home-field support and an impressive scoring defense. However, UAB’s passing defense could make this contest more difficult than some Bulls fans expect. Crowther’s rushing production should become the deciding factor if USF establishes offensive balance. Meanwhile, Howard and Hicks must help contain UAB’s rushing attack and pressure Burton. Van Buren also needs to maintain his impressive interception-free streak while producing more explosive plays. Expect a competitive first half before South Florida’s defense creates separation after halftime.
The Bulls should capitalize on UAB’s struggles against the run and earn their sixth victory. Prediction: South Florida defeats UAB 27-17. A victory would send USF into November with renewed confidence and another important conference win. More importantly, it would keep the Bulls moving toward a fourth consecutive bowl appearance. For Hartline and his players, Halloween offers the perfect opportunity to restart their conference momentum. And for Bulls fans, another victory over UAB would make Saturday’s celebration even sweeter.
