Eight weeks into the 2026 college football season, several quarterbacks have separated themselves from the competition. Some entered the season with enormous expectations. Others have surprised fans with remarkable performances and impressive leadership. Meanwhile, several highly regarded quarterbacks have struggled with turnovers, inconsistent accuracy, and disappointing results. The quarterback position remains college football’s most important offensive position. However, impressive passing statistics don’t always tell the entire story. Winning matters, especially against ranked opponents. Additionally, decision-making, efficiency, leadership, and protecting the football separate great quarterbacks from average ones. These grades reflect each quarterback’s overall performance through Week 8, including the October 24 games. They consider season-long production, opponent quality, consistency, and the quarterback’s contribution to team success. Here are ten quarterbacks who deserve attention as the regular season enters its final stretch.
1\. Darian Mensah, Miami Hurricanes — Grade: A+
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah has delivered one of college football’s most impressive statistical performances. Through seven games, Mensah has thrown for 2,151 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just one interception. Even more impressive, he has completed 166 of 204 passes, demonstrating outstanding accuracy. His 81.4 percent completion rate illustrates his command of Miami’s passing attack. Furthermore, Mensah leads qualified quarterbacks with 0.61 expected points added per drop back. Miami also entered the final weekend of October undefeated, strengthening his case among the nation’s elite. The Hurricanes defeated Pittsburgh 52-23 on October 24, extending their impressive start. Mensah has combined explosive production with excellent ball security, making him extremely difficult to defend.
Verdict: Mensah earns the highest grade because his production, efficiency, and team success complement each other.
2\. Gunner Stockton, Georgia Bulldogs — Grade: A
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has provided the Bulldogs with impressive offensive production. Through six starts, Stockton has completed 117 of 158 passes for 1,570 yards. He has also thrown 16 touchdown passes against four interceptions. His 74.1 percent completion rate demonstrates consistency within Georgia’s offensive system. Additionally, Stockton ranks among the nation’s most efficient quarterbacks in several advanced passing categories. Georgia entered Week 9 with a 6-1 record and remained firmly in the national championship conversation. However, his four interceptions leave some room for improvement. Stockton must continue protecting the football as Georgia approaches several difficult SEC matchups.
Verdict: Stockton deserves an A for his efficiency and leadership, although turnovers prevent a perfect grade.
3\. Julian Sayin, Ohio State Buckeyes — Grade: A
Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin has produced impressive numbers while leading one of America’s strongest programs. Through six starts, Sayin has accumulated 2,007 passing yards and 19 touchdowns. He has completed 131 of 192 passes while throwing four interceptions. His 184.5 NCAA passing efficiency rating places him among the country’s most productive passers. Furthermore, Sayin has averaged more than 10 adjusted net yards per passing attempt. Ohio State’s talented receiving corps certainly helps. However, Sayin still must make accurate throws and smart decisions. The Buckeyes remain national championship contenders, and their quarterback plays an important role in that pursuit.
Verdict: Sayin earns an A for his explosive production, although improved consistency could elevate his grade.

4\. Josh Hoover, Indiana Hoosiers — Grade: A
Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover has helped the Hoosiers remain among college football’s leading contenders. Through eight starts, Hoover has thrown for 1,741 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only one interception. He has completed 116 of 187 passes, giving Indiana an efficient passing attack. Furthermore, his 0.50 expected points added per drop back ranks third nationally among qualified quarterbacks. Indiana defeated Michigan 13-6 on October 24, demonstrating its ability to win difficult defensive battles. However, the offense must continue developing against stronger competition. Hoover’s touchdown-to-interception ratio remains particularly impressive.
Verdict: Hoover earns an A for excellent ball security, productive passing, and consistent contributions to Indiana’s success.
5\. Aidan Chiles, Northwestern Wildcats — Grade: A
Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles deserves considerably more national attention. Through seven starts, Chiles has completed 117 of 164 passes for 1,617 yards. He has thrown 12 touchdowns against only one interception. Additionally, his 0.52 expected points added per drop back ranks second nationally among qualified quarterbacks. Northwestern defeated Rutgers 42-14 on October 24, continuing its impressive season. Chiles has shown excellent efficiency while limiting mistakes that could damage Northwestern’s offensive momentum. His 71.3 percent completion rate further strengthens his case among the nation’s best quarterbacks.
Verdict: Chiles earns an A because his efficiency, accuracy, and ball security have exceeded expectations.
6\. Braden Atkinson, Oregon State Beavers — Grade: A
Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson has produced some of the country’s biggest passing numbers. Through seven starts, Atkinson has completed 188 of 272 passes for 2,583 yards. He also leads the nation with 24 touchdown passes while throwing just two interceptions. Furthermore, his passing yardage leads all qualified quarterbacks through Week 8. His production deserves recognition regardless of Oregon State’s national ranking. However, competition level and overall team results must influence any comparison with championship contenders. Atkinson has demonstrated excellent passing accuracy and an ability to create explosive plays.
Verdict: Atkinson earns an A for exceptional statistical production and impressive touchdown efficiency.
7\. Kenny Minchey, Kentucky Wildcats — Grade: A-
Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey has become one of the SEC’s most intriguing success stories. Through eight games, Minchey has thrown for 1,755 yards and 16 touchdowns against one interception. His completion percentage sits around 69 percent. Additionally, Minchey has demonstrated impressive composure while protecting the football. Kentucky defeated Vanderbilt 34-17 on October 24 after overcoming an early 10-point deficit. Minchey completed 19 of 26 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed a rushing touchdown during the victory. Furthermore, his interception-free streak reached 200 consecutive attempts. Kentucky’s strong SEC performance has increased national attention surrounding its quarterback.
Verdict: Minchey earns an A-minus for efficient passing, excellent ball security, and continued development.
8\. Sam Leavitt, LSU Tigers — Grade: B+
LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt has displayed impressive offensive talent throughout the season. Through eight starts, Leavitt has thrown for 2,171 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, his eight interceptions represent a significant concern. His completion percentage sits just above 70 percent. Nevertheless, Leavitt has recently demonstrated why LSU remains dangerous. He has accumulated 676 passing yards and seven touchdowns across his last two games. LSU defeated Auburn 38-17 on October 24, strengthening its position entering the season’s final stretch. Leavitt possesses the talent to challenge elite defenses, but he must reduce turnovers.
Verdict: Leavitt earns a B-plus for his production and recent improvement, although interceptions lower his overall grade.
9\. Noah Fifita, Arizona Wildcats — Grade: A-
Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita has quietly developed one of the nation’s most accurate passing attacks. His 74.1 percent completion rate ranks among the national leaders. Additionally, Fifita has demonstrated excellent accuracy on difficult throws. Arizona defeated Iowa State 39-3 on October 24. Fifita completed 27 of 34 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. He also connected with Isaiah Mizell for a 71-yard touchdown early in the contest. That explosive play helped Arizona establish immediate control. Furthermore, Arizona improved to 6-1, strengthening its position in the Big 12 race.
Verdict: Fifita earns an A-minus for his accuracy, explosive passing, and contribution to Arizona’s success.
10\. Tayven Jackson, North Texas Mean Green — Grade: A-
North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson deserves recognition among college football’s most productive passers. Through seven starts, Jackson has thrown for more than 2,100 yards and 18 touchdowns. His 0.46 expected points added per drop back places him among the national leaders. Furthermore, Jackson has developed into one of the American Conference’s most dangerous offensive players. North Texas defeated Navy 49-39 on October 24. Jackson completed 17 of 23 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. However, he also threw an interception, highlighting an area requiring continued improvement. Jackson’s ability to produce explosive passing plays gives North Texas a significant offensive advantage.
Verdict: Jackson earns an A-minus for his production and consistency, although stronger competition will further test his abilities.
Final Thoughts: Who Deserves the Top Grade?
The 2026 college football quarterback race has produced several outstanding performers. Mensah currently deserves the highest grade because his statistics combine remarkable accuracy with exceptional ball security. Meanwhile, Stockton and Sayin remain important pieces of two national championship contenders. Hoover and Chiles have also demonstrated why quarterback efficiency matters as much as passing yardage. Additionally, Atkinson and Jackson prove that outstanding quarterback play extends beyond college football’s traditional powerhouse programs. However, the remaining regular-season games could dramatically change these evaluations. Conference championship races will intensify, and defenses will increasingly challenge the nation’s leading quarterbacks.
The best quarterbacks must respond with accurate throws, smart decisions, and strong leadership. Furthermore, the College Football Playoff race will create additional pressure during November. Some quarterbacks will strengthen their reputations. Others could struggle when opponents discover weaknesses. For now, Mensah sets the standard through Week 8. Nevertheless, the competition remains wide open, and several quarterbacks could challenge his position. The biggest question remains simple: Which quarterback will maintain his excellence when the season matters most?
