The South Florida Bulls return to Raymond James Stadium on Saturday night, looking to end their two-game losing streak. However, the Kent State Golden Flashes hope to spoil USF’s homecoming celebration.
Head coach Brian Hartline and the Bulls enter the matchup with a 4-2 overall record. Meanwhile, Kent State arrives in Tampa with a 2-4 record under head coach Mark Carney.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Eastern on October 17, with ESPN+ carrying the broadcast.
South Florida desperately needs a victory after consecutive heartbreaking losses against Temple and UTSA. Both defeats exposed problems that Hartline must address before American Conference play resumes.
The Bulls also have an opportunity to rebuild confidence before their upcoming bye week. Kent State presents a favorable matchup, but USF cannot afford another disappointing performance.
Saturday’s matchup marks the first meeting between South Florida and Kent State in program history.
Although these programs have never faced each other, USF has experience against Mid-American Conference opponents.
Earlier this season, the Bulls defeated Bowling Green 14-6 on September 26. That victory demonstrated USF’s defensive strength, although the offense struggled to generate consistent production.
Kent State represents another MAC opponent from Ohio. However, the Golden Flashes bring different offensive challenges, particularly with their mobile quarterback.
USF announced the matchup in January as part of its completed 2026 nonconference schedule.
Additionally, the game gives South Florida seven scheduled home contests for the first time since 2019.
The Bulls will also celebrate their final homecoming at Raymond James Stadium before their planned stadium transition in 2027.
USF Searching for Answers After Two Tough Losses
South Florida started the season with four consecutive victories, creating excitement around Hartline’s first season.
However, the Bulls have experienced frustration during their last two games.
Temple defeated USF 17-13 on October 3 after quarterback Ajani Sheppard delivered a late touchdown run.
The Bulls managed only 319 offensive yards and struggled to finish drives.
Five days later, UTSA handed South Florida another painful defeat.
The Roadrunners scored with 15 seconds remaining, securing a 31-24 victory in San Antonio.
Quarterback Owen McCown extended the winning drive with a crucial third-down scramble.
Consequently, USF enters homecoming needing improvements on both sides of the football.
Hartline continues emphasizing execution, accountability, and attention to detail.
The Bulls have shown enough talent to compete, but late-game mistakes have become costly.
Saturday provides an opportunity to correct those issues against an opponent struggling with consistency.
Michael Van Buren Jr. Must Lead the Bulls Offense
Quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. remains one of South Florida’s most important offensive players.
The former Mississippi State and LSU quarterback has averaged approximately 178 passing yards per game.
More importantly, Van Buren has avoided throwing an interception through USF’s first six contests.
However, the Bulls need more explosive plays from their passing attack.
South Florida ranked among the nation’s most productive offenses last season. Unfortunately, that success has not carried over consistently into 2026.
Wide receivers Bryson Rodgers and Joshua Porter could help change that situation.
Rodgers demonstrated his big-play potential with a long touchdown reception against UTSA.
Meanwhile, Porter offers another receiving option capable of challenging Kent State’s secondary.
Running back D.J. Crowther also deserves considerable attention.
Crowther averages approximately 5.1 yards per carry and has scored eight touchdowns this season.
His combination of speed, balance, and scoring ability gives South Florida a dependable offensive weapon.
The Bulls should establish their running attack early, creating opportunities for Van Buren through play-action passes.
Additionally, tight end Evan Dangler could provide another reliable option on critical downs.
USF must avoid penalties, missed assignments, and unsuccessful red-zone possessions.
A complete offensive performance would provide momentum heading into the final stretch of conference play.
Kent State Quarterback Dru DeShields Presents a Challenge
Kent State quarterback Dru DeShields presents the biggest challenge for South Florida’s defense.
DeShields possesses the ability to extend plays with his legs while attacking defenses through the air.
Last season, he threw 18 touchdown passes against only three interceptions.
However, his production has declined during the 2026 campaign.
Through six games, DeShields has thrown four touchdowns and six interceptions.
Those turnovers have contributed to Kent State’s offensive struggles.
Nevertheless, his mobility creates problems when opposing defenses lose containment.
DeShields produced more than 70 rushing yards in each of Kent State’s two victories.
Consequently, South Florida must maintain disciplined rushing lanes and prevent unnecessary quarterback scrambles.
Running back Mason King provides another offensive option for the Golden Flashes.
King leads Kent State’s running backs with 202 rushing yards entering Saturday.
However, the Golden Flashes average only 3.1 yards per rushing attempt.
Their inability to establish a consistent ground attack places additional pressure on DeShields.
South Florida should have opportunities to disrupt Kent State’s offense through aggressive defensive pressure.
Wayne Harris and Da’Realyst Clark Could Make Big Plays
Kent State’s receiving corps features two players capable of creating problems for South Florida’s secondary.
Wide receiver Wayne Harris enters Saturday following an impressive performance against Western Michigan.
Harris caught 11 passes for 164 yards, demonstrating his ability to produce explosive plays.
His performance also showed Kent State’s willingness to challenge opposing defenses through the passing game.
Meanwhile, Da’Realyst Clark provides another dangerous offensive weapon.
Clark has recorded 20 receptions for 253 yards this season.
Additionally, his return abilities make him particularly dangerous on special teams.
Clark earned MAC Special Teams Player of the Year honors last season.
Therefore, USF must remain disciplined when kicking or punting in his direction.
Kent State needs both receivers to contribute if the Golden Flashes hope to challenge the Bulls.
Otherwise, South Florida could concentrate its defensive attention on stopping DeShields.
USF Defense Could Determine the Outcome
South Florida’s defense has carried the team through several difficult stretches this season.
Under defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge, the Bulls have allowed only 17.3 points per game.
That production places South Florida among the nation’s better scoring defenses.
Additionally, the Bulls have recorded 41 tackles for loss through six games.
Linebacker Sam Robinson and nickel defender Tayvion Beasley lead the team with 3.5 tackles for loss apiece.
Safety Ayden Jackson has also emerged as a key contributor.
Jackson leads USF with 37 tackles while adding three tackles for loss and three pass breakups.
Meanwhile, defensive tackle Asani Redwood provides another important presence along the defensive front.
The Bulls must pressure DeShields without allowing him to escape the pocket.
Additionally, South Florida needs to create more turnovers.
USF has not recorded an interception since its season opener.
Kent State’s turnover problems could provide opportunities for the Bulls to reverse that trend.
A strong defensive performance could help South Florida control field position throughout Saturday’s contest.
Kent State Defense Features Several Playmakers
Although Kent State has struggled defensively, several players deserve South Florida’s attention.
Linebacker Rocco Nicholl leads the Golden Flashes with three sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss.
Nicholl creates pressure through aggressive blitzing and strong pursuit against running plays.
Meanwhile, safety Joel Cordoba leads Kent State with 30 tackles.
Cordoba provides important support against both the passing and running attacks.
The Golden Flashes have also demonstrated an ability to force turnovers.
Kent State has recovered opportunities through six forced fumbles and four interceptions.
However, its defense has struggled against stronger opponents.
South Carolina defeated Kent State 57-0 earlier this season.
Ohio State followed with a commanding 59-3 victory.
Those performances exposed weaknesses that South Florida should attempt to exploit.
Nevertheless, the Golden Flashes played much better during their narrow 13-10 loss against Ohio.
USF cannot overlook Kent State simply because of its overall record.
Three Keys to a South Florida Victory
First, South Florida must establish offensive rhythm during the opening quarter.
The Bulls have struggled with slow starts against FBS competition this season.
An early touchdown could help Van Buren settle into the game while putting pressure on Kent State.
Second, USF must contain DeShields and prevent explosive quarterback runs.
The Golden Flashes depend heavily on their quarterback’s ability to create opportunities.
Keeping him inside the pocket would make Kent State’s offense more predictable.
Finally, South Florida must finish drives and eliminate unnecessary mistakes.
The Bulls cannot continue wasting scoring opportunities through penalties or poor execution.
Hartline also needs his defense to remain focused during crucial third-down situations.
Those situations contributed directly to the recent losses against Temple and UTSA.
Improved execution could make Saturday considerably more comfortable for South Florida.
Prediction: USF Takes Care of Business
South Florida enters Saturday as a substantial favorite against Kent State.
The Bulls possess advantages in defensive production, offensive talent, and overall depth.
However, recent performances demonstrate that talent alone does not guarantee victory.
Hartline needs his players to deliver a complete four-quarter performance.
Van Buren should find opportunities against Kent State’s secondary, particularly when the running game creates favorable situations.
Crowther could also enjoy a productive evening against a defense that has struggled against stronger opponents.
Meanwhile, South Florida’s defensive front should generate consistent pressure against DeShields.
Kent State could produce several explosive plays through Harris or Clark.
Nevertheless, the Golden Flashes might struggle to sustain scoring drives against USF’s defense.
The Bulls should use homecoming as an opportunity to restore confidence before their bye week.
More importantly, a victory would improve South Florida’s record to 5-2 entering the final five conference games.
Final score prediction: South Florida 34, Kent State 13.
Saturday represents more than another nonconference matchup for the Bulls.
It provides an opportunity to demonstrate improvement after two frustrating defeats.
If South Florida executes consistently, homecoming should end with a much-needed celebration in Tampa.
