The 2026 NFL season begins Wednesday night with a Super Bowl rematch. The Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots in a highly anticipated opener. However, the opening game only represents the beginning of another unpredictable NFL season. Every team enters Week 1 with a clean 0-0 record. Several teams enter the season with legitimate Super Bowl expectations. Meanwhile, others face major questions before their first kickoff. Here are my NFL power rankings heading into Week 1.
- Los Angeles Rams
The Rams enter the season as my No. 1 team. Matthew Stafford returns after winning the league’s MVP award. Los Angeles also added Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald to an already loaded defense. The Rams also added Trent McDuffie during the offseason. PFF ranks Los Angeles first, with a 14 percent Super Bowl projection.
- Seattle Seahawks
Seattle deserves enormous respect after winning Super Bowl LX. The Seahawks still have one of football’s strongest defenses. Jaxon Smith-Njigba also returns after winning Offensive Player of the Year. Seattle faces New England in Wednesday night’s opener.
- Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen remains the biggest reason for Buffalo’s high ranking. The Bills also promoted Joe Brady to head coach. Buffalo added DJ Moore during the offseason. The defense also gets a fresh approach under coordinator Jim Leonhard.
- Denver Broncos
Denver finished 2025 with plenty of momentum. The Broncos also added Jaylen Waddle to their passing attack. Their defense remains one of the league’s biggest strengths. Bo Nix now needs to take another step forward.
- Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore should rebound after missing the playoffs last season. Lamar Jackson returns healthy and remains one of football’s most dangerous quarterbacks. Jesse Minter also takes over as head coach. The Ravens have enough talent to challenge for the AFC crown.
- Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia remains one of the NFC’s most talented teams. The Eagles still have difference-makers on both sides of the football. New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion will face plenty of pressure. Still, Philadelphia deserves a spot near the top.
- Houston Texans
Houston brings back an elite defense. The Texans also expect their offense to improve during Year 2 of their current development. The loss of rookie receiver Jayden Higgins creates one concern. However, Houston still possesses enough talent to contend in the AFC.
- Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati could become one of the biggest stories this season. Joe Burrow returns healthy after missing nine games last season. The Bengals also upgraded their defense with Dexter Lawrence II. Cincinnati enters the year with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
- Dallas Cowboys
Dallas moved up my rankings after making major defensive improvements. Christian Parker now leads the defense as coordinator. The Cowboys also added several important defensive pieces. However, they must prove they can handle pressure in big games.
- Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have reached the playoffs during both Jim Harbaugh seasons. Now, Mike McDaniel takes over the offense. Justin Herbert gives Los Angeles an elite quarterback. The offensive line remains the biggest concern heading into Week 1.
- Chicago Bears
Chicago enters the season with plenty of optimism around Caleb Williams. The Bears also made significant changes around their young quarterback. Still, injuries have created questions in the secondary. Chicago could either rise quickly or fall quickly.
- Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville has quietly become one of my favorite teams this season. Trevor Lawrence has plenty of weapons around him. The Jaguars also received significant attention from national power rankings. Their offensive line remains one area worth watching.
- Green Bay Packers
Green Bay remains dangerous despite losing Josh Jacobs temporarily. Matt LaFleur should find ways to keep the offense productive. The defense also added veteran talent. Still, the Packers face an early challenge against Minnesota.
- New England Patriots
New England reached the Super Bowl last season. Now, the Patriots must prove that campaign was not a fluke. Drake Maye enters another important season. The offense also received more support around its young quarterback.
- Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes remains the biggest reason for optimism in Kansas City. However, the Chiefs enter the season outside the usual championship tier. Their revamped secondary still needs to prove itself. The offensive line also creates concerns ahead of Monday night’s opener.
- Detroit Lions
Detroit missed the playoffs last season after finishing 9-8. The Lions still have enough offensive talent to make noise. However, injuries have created significant concerns. National rankings range widely in Detroit entering Week 1.
- San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers remain dangerous when healthy. Unfortunately, injuries continue to surround several important players. George Kittle, Nick Bosa and Mike Evans face health questions. San Francisco could climb quickly if the roster stays healthy.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay enters the season with renewed confidence. Baker Mayfield recently signed a three-year, $165 million extension. Vita Vea also received a new contract. The Buccaneers now face Cincinnati on the road Sunday. National rankings place Tampa between 14th and 20th. NFL.com currently ranks the Buccaneers 18th.
- Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota enters a fascinating season with Kyler Murray at quarterback. Kevin O’Connell now gets another major quarterback challenge. The Vikings have enough talent to compete. However, their defense needs to improve quickly.
- Pittsburgh Steelers
Aaron Rodgers returns for another NFL season. Mike McCarthy also takes over as Pittsburgh’s head coach. The Steelers added Michael Pittman Jr. and Rico Dowdle. Their defense should keep them competitive.
- Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis finished 8-9 last season. Daniel Jones returns healthy after missing time. The Colts also added Sauce Gardner to strengthen their defense. Jonathan Taylor remains their biggest offensive weapon.
- New Orleans Saints
The Saints enter another rebuilding season with Tyler Shough at quarterback. Chris Olave gives the offense an established playmaker. However, injuries have hurt New Orleans before Week 1. National rankings place the Saints between 19th and 25th.
- Carolina Panthers
Carolina has quietly improved its roster. Bryce Young now needs to show consistent growth. The Panthers also added Jaelan Phillips defensively. Their offense must improve after ranking 27th in scoring last season.
- Tennessee Titans
Cam Ward enters his second NFL season with a new coaching staff. Robert Saleh and Brian Daboll must help him develop. The Titans still lack enough proven talent. However, Ward gives Tennessee an exciting building block.
- Arizona Cardinals
Arizona faces a difficult schedule this season. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love also enters Week 1 with an ankle injury. Mike LaFleur takes over as head coach. The Cardinals need several young players to develop quickly.
- New York Giants
John Harbaugh begins his first season with the Giants. His first game comes against Dallas in prime time. The Giants have intriguing young talent. Still, their defense needs significant improvement.
- Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta has talent, but quarterback uncertainty creates major concerns. Tua Tagovailoa gets the opening start. The Falcons could move upward with strong quarterback play. For now, they remain outside the playoff conversation.
- New York Jets
Geno Smith gets another opportunity with his former team. The Jets also hope Breece Hall can stay healthy. New York has some intriguing offensive pieces. However, the roster still lacks enough proven depth.
- Las Vegas Raiders
Kirk Cousins begins the season as Las Vegas’ starting quarterback. Rookie Fernando Mendoza remains the long-term storyline. The Raiders have several questions across the roster. Therefore, expectations remain modest heading into Week 1.
- Cleveland Browns
Cleveland enters the season with major quarterback concerns. Deshaun Watson won the starting job over Shedeur Sanders. The Browns also lost Myles Garrett during the offseason. That creates another massive challenge for the defense.
- Washington Commanders
Washington faces serious offensive-line problems heading into Week 1. Laremy Tunsil’s injury creates an especially difficult situation. The Commanders still have Jayden Daniels. However, keeping their quarterback upright must become priority number one.
- Miami Dolphins
Miami starts the season at the bottom of my rankings. The Dolphins have undergone major changes since last season. Malik Willis now leads the offense. Miami also carries an extremely thin roster into the season. The Dolphins have promising young players. Still, they need major improvement before challenging the AFC’s top teams.
The Bottom Line
The Rams enter Week 1 as the team to beat. However, Seattle remains close behind after winning the Super Bowl. Buffalo, Baltimore and Denver also have legitimate championship potential. Meanwhile, Cincinnati could become the biggest threat nobody wants to face. The middle of the rankings remains wide open. One or two early wins could dramatically change the picture. That uncertainty makes Week 1 so important. After months of speculation, predictions finally meet reality. Now, the 2026 NFL season can begin.
I agree with most of these rankings.
