The American Athletic Conference (AAC) title race is coming down to the wire, and this Saturday’s clash in Annapolis, Maryland, between the No. 25 USF Bulls (7-2, 4-1 AAC) and the Navy Midshipmen (7-2, 5-1 AAC) is an outright elimination game. This matchup is a fascinating contrast in styles, pitting a dynamic, high-scoring offense against a perennial rushing powerhouse, all with massive postseason implications.

Stakes are Sky-High: CFP and AAC Title Hopes

For the USF Bulls, who recently received their first-ever College Football Playoff ranking (No. 25), this game is a crucial checkpoint. A victory keeps them on track for a spot in the AAC Championship game and keeps their long-shot dreams of the Group of Five’s automatic CFP bid alive. A loss, however, would be detrimental, dropping their playoff chances dramatically.

The Navy Midshipmen, despite recent back-to-back losses after a strong 7-0 start, currently sit atop the AAC standings in the loss column (tied with four other teams). A win on Senior Day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium would cement their place as a major contender for the conference title game.

Strength vs. Strength: The Rushing Showdown

The feature of this game will be a monumental battle of ground attacks, with two of the nation’s best rushing teams going head-to-head:

Team	National Rushing Rank	Rushing Yards Per Game	Offensive Style
Navy Midshipmen	1st in FBS	304.9 yards/game	Hybrid Triple Option/Wing-T
USF Bulls	10th in FBS	226.9 yards/game	RPO/Up-Tempo Spread

Navy’s Identity: The Midshipmen run the ball nearly 76% of the time, utilizing their famous triple option attack. Their offense is built on discipline, deception, and out-leveraging the defense. As USF Coach Alex Golesh noted, stopping Navy requires impeccable “eye discipline” and defensive “integrity.”
USF’s Dynamic Attack: The Bulls, led by senior quarterback Byrum Brown, have one of the most explosive and balanced offenses in the country (6th in scoring, 7th in total offense). Brown recently became the first player in the last 30 years (NCAA or NFL) to record 200 yards passing, 100 yards rushing, and a 90% completion percentage in the same game, making him a true dual-threat nightmare.

The biggest question is whether the Bulls’ 24th-ranked run defense (allowing only 3.21 yards per carry) can hold up against Navy’s relentless, number-one rushing attack.

Key Matchups to Watch

USF QB Byrum Brown vs. Navy Secondary: Navy’s defense ranks 115th nationally against the pass, allowing over 250 yards per game. Brown and USF’s talented receiving corps will look to exploit this weakness, forcing the Midshipmen to abandon their preferred run-heavy strategy.
Navy QB Blake Horvath (Status TBD) vs. USF Run Defense: Navy’s rushing success hinges on the quarterback’s decision-making in the triple option. If USF’s defensive line and linebackers can force early losses and stay disciplined, they may be able to slow Navy’s clock-killing drive ability.
