The spring sports at the University of South Florida are near an end as far as the regular season. It has been great to see three of the many do very well. Two of the teams had a new coach and one of them started their first official season. The other one has had a coach that has been with the program for a very long time. It was great to see the USF Bulls have their women’s lacrosse program finally have their first season and they did outstanding. Where the lacrosse team plays right across the street is where the baseball and softball teams call home. Let’s look at the three teams close at the end of their regular seasons.
Lacrosse
The USF Bulls finished their regular season with a record of 12-4. With that record they made it to the AAC Championship tournament. The tournament took place in Norfolk, Virginia at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The first round they play the East Carolina Pirates. The game was close, but the Bulls came out on top winning by just two goals 14-12. The next game in the tournament was against James Madison. They played James Madison just a few weeks earlier and fell to them by 14 goals with the final score being 20-6. USF was looking for some revenge and a chance to win the championship but once again James Madison defeated the Bulls 18-9. With the loss the Bulls finished their full lacrosse season, and their record was 13-5 but a great start to the program.
Softball
For the ladies Bulls something happened for the first time in program history. USF had never won an AAC Championship. Well just the past weekend they did just that being down early to the North Texas Mean Green. The Bulls were down early 2-0 but were able to come back and win the game by just one run 5-4. As the final out was made the ladies charged the field in celebration. Before the Mean Green game USF beat the East Carolina Pirates 3-1. With the win it gave the Bulls an automatic bid in the NCAA Softball tournament. The first game they will play will be versus the Auburn Tigers. The tournament will take place in the Bulls home state of Florida and the capital city of Tallahassee. USF hosted the AAC Championship which helped them possibly win it all. Let’s beat the Auburn Tigers.
Baseball
The USF Bulls baseball team under new head coach Mitch Hannahs has three regular season games left and has a record of 27-22. The Bulls find themselves third overall in the AAC. In the final three games they will play a team that is behind them in the standings in the East Carolina Pirates. USF could sneak into second place as they are only one game behind the Charlotte 49ers. Either way USF will be heading to the AAC Baseball tournament that starts next week. The interesting part is that both games versus the North Florida Ospreys were cancelled. This is better than they were a year ago when they won their last game to just make the tournament.
