The Last week in MLB was about a player being suspended for violating the performance-enhancing drugs policy, an outfielder in the American League underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, and a third baseman will be out several weeks due to injury.

San Diego Padres Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Suspended 80 Games for Violating PED Policy

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has been suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.

The star shortstop had been sidelined for the entire 2022 campaign up to this point due to a wrist injury but had started a rehab assignment last week.

Tatis broke his wrist in December during a motorcycle accident.

MLB announced that Tatis tested positive for clostebol, a synthetic steroid that increases testosterone.

This is the same substance that Dee Strange-Gordon tested positive for in 2016.

Tatis released a statement saying he inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained clostebol, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Tatis will miss the remainder of this season, plus an additional 32 games to start the 2023 season.

He will lose about $2.9 million in salary due to the suspension.

Tatis, who planned to play in the World Baseball Classic next spring, is also now ineligible to play for the Dominican Republic, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY

The Padres also released a statement saying they were surprised that Tatis tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug that violated MLB policy, per Nightengale.

The strange aspect of the suspension is that Tatis was close to coming back, and he used a drug that had a banned substance to treat ringworm.

The suspension hurts not only Tatis but the Padres as well.

The club made moves at the trade deadline to improve their team as they acquired outfielder Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals.

They were optimistic Soto and Tatis would help them make a deep run in the postseason.

Padres general manager A.J. Preller talked to the media several days ago after the suspension was announced and discussed they have not been able to trust Tatis Jr. for the past several months, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Houston Astros Outfielder Michael Brantley Underwent Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Houston Astros outfielder Michael Brantley will miss the rest of the 2022 season as he underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery, per a team announcement.

Brantley had been on the injured list since June 27 with a shoulder injury.

Before being injured, Brantley was having a solid season for the Astros.

He posted a .288 batting average and .785 OPS in 64 games with 28 runs scored, 70 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, five home runs, and 26 RBIs.

The loss of Brantley for the year is huge for the Astros as he is a good hitter in the lineup and plays solid defense in the outfield.

Brantley had spent his last four seasons with the Astros and played a vital role with the team.

He is set to become a free agent this winter.

New York Yankees Third Baseman Matt Carpenter Out Several Weeks with Broken Foot

The New York Yankees will be without a key player who has been significant this season.

Third baseman Matt Carpenter has been placed on the injured list with a left foot fracture, per a team announcement.

Carpenter will be out six-to-eight weeks due to the injury.

He will be re-evaluated in four weeks to get a better sense of his recovery and a possible timeline for his return, per Marly Rivera of ESPN.

Carpenter was injured when he fouled a ball off his foot last week against the Seattle Mariners.

The veteran was having a terrific season for the Yankees in limited action.

He compiled a .305 average and 1.138 OPS in 47 games with 28 runs scored, nine doubles, 15 home runs, and 37 RBIs.
