This was the 122nd version of the Army-Navy game. One of the oldest rivalries in college football. This game is also called America’s game. The game has more meaning than just a college football game. Most players will either head off to the NFL or never play football again. These kids will now be on the same team and defend our freedoms. They play for a shot at the Commander in Chief trophy. No matter who won the game yesterday, Army would retain the trophy. That is because the teams that play that are not Army and Navy is Air Force. All three teams when they played against each other was 1-1. Most would have seen this game as Army should have won easily. Navy has not had the best of the seasons but winning against your rival would make your season.
This game started with both teams scoring. Last year the game was a 15-0 win for Army. Navy struggled last year so we all knew they would have a chip on their shoulders. That game was at the West Point Academy home of the Army. That was mainly because of Covid-19. The Midshipmen won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Going into the half the Black Knights led 13-7 with a good chance to win the game. They had a good drive to open the second half getting their second touchdown. That put them in the lead by one point, 14-13. It was anyone’s game at this point. The Midshipmen defense stood tall and held the triple offense of the Black Knights at bay after the first half. This was what the Army-Navy game is all about.
This game has always been a battle of who wins in the trenches. It was also said, by watching the telecast, that whoever plays the cleanest game would win. There were no turnovers in this game. The game only had a total of seven penalties. Five of them went against the Navy. That did not matter as the Midshipmen were able to score 10 second-half points while the Black Knights did not score any at all. They had some chances but were unable to capitalize. The final play was a fourth down and the Navy was able to make a stop and the game was theirs. It sent the Navy sideline into a celebration this was a big win for them. Unfortunately, they will not be going to a bowl game. But this win was like they won a bowl game. This was the Army-Navy game.
For the Black Knights, they will be heading to a bowl game against the Missouri Tigers. At the end of the game, both college songs were sung. The team that sings second is the team that won but during the Army song, the Midshipmen sang along. The Black Knights were right alongside the Navy as their song was sung. It is so cool to see this and the cadets for both academies in attendance. This is not just a game it’s the Army-Navy game. This is one game that I never miss and many have said the same.
