There are several outstanding offensive linemen that will likely be taken in the first ten picks of the 2020 NFL Draft. Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton.
Becton is exactly what an offensive line coach wants. He is a mean blocker and he just mauls defensive lineman over. Becton is 6’7, 369 pounds and brings absolute tenacity to an offensive line. Defensive lineman might as well call him “The Incredible Hulk”. He is huge and takes defensive players down easily. He can clear the field for running backs and give quarterbacks extra time in the pocket. He is very light on his feet so he brings agility with that toughness. He has excellent footwork to keep himself in front of defensive players. He is a terror at the left tackle position. He can practically toss defenders to the field with his natural strength. Coaches want left tackles to be agile and hostile. Becton fits the description perfectly.
Becton faced the tough Clemson defense last season. Clemson’s defensive line couldn’t get past him. Rookie left tackles typically have something that needs improvement. Becton needs to work on his technique, but that’s very easy to work on. He may need to shed a few pounds to keep his weight in check so that his size doesn’t become a liability. Becton may be a little bit of a project because of the need to improve his technique overall, but he should be ready to start week one on any roster that has a hole at left tackle.  He needs to develop better use of his hands.
