The Tampa Bay Lightning head to Long Island looking to extend their three-game winning streak. However, the New York Islanders have other plans for Saturday night’s showdown. The Lightning enter the contest with a 3-1-0 record following Thursday’s 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Meanwhile, New York presents another challenging test for Jon Cooper’s team. The puck drops Saturday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Tampa Bay has found its rhythm after a disappointing season-opening loss against the New York Rangers. The Lightning followed that defeat with three consecutive home victories. First, Tampa Bay defeated the Washington Capitals 3-1 on October 3. Next, the Lightning handled the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 two nights later. Finally, Tampa Bay edged Minnesota 3-2, continuing its early-season momentum. Now, the Lightning must carry that success onto the road.
However, the Islanders have proven troublesome for Tampa Bay in recent meetings. New York swept last season’s three-game series, giving Saturday’s matchup an interesting storyline.
The Lightning and Islanders have developed an interesting rivalry through regular-season meetings and memorable playoff battles. Most notably, Tampa Bay defeated New York in consecutive Stanley Cup semifinal series during 2020 and 2021. The Lightning won the 2020 Eastern Conference Final in six games. A year later, Tampa Bay survived a seven-game semifinal series.
Those victories helped Tampa Bay capture consecutive Stanley Cup championships. However, the Islanders have enjoyed more success in recent regular-season meetings. New York defeated Tampa Bay 2-1 on December 2, 2025. Four days later, the Islanders earned a 2-0 shutout victory in Tampa. The Islanders completed their sweep with a 3-2 shootout victory on December 13.
Consequently, the Lightning enter Saturday searching for their first victory against New York since April 1, 2025. That previous victory featured a 4-1 Tampa Bay win on Long Island. Interestingly, Tampa Bay won two of three meetings during the 2024-25 season. However, New York reversed that advantage last season. These results highlight the importance of disciplined hockey and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

The Lightning will once again rely heavily on Nikita Kucherov to generate scoring opportunities. Kucherov remains one of hockey’s most dangerous playmakers, combining excellent vision with an accurate shot. Against Minnesota, Kucherov collected two assists, helping Tampa Bay secure its third consecutive victory. Meanwhile, veteran defenseman John Carlson delivered his biggest performance since joining Tampa Bay.
Carlson scored twice against Minnesota, including a power-play goal during the second period. Additionally, Anthony Cirelli contributed a goal, giving the Lightning another important offensive weapon. Carlson’s production could become particularly important against New York’s structured defensive system. The Islanders rarely make scoring opportunities easy, especially when their goaltending performs at a high level.
Tampa Bay will also need contributions from Brayden Point and Jake Guentzel. Point provides speed through the neutral zone and creates scoring chances around the net. Guentzel brings championship experience, offensive creativity, and a proven ability to finish scoring opportunities.
Furthermore, Brandon Hagel gives Tampa Bay another dangerous option through his relentless forechecking and offensive instincts. Captain Victor Hedman must also provide leadership and stability along the blue line. Ultimately, Tampa Bay needs contributions throughout its lineup rather than depending entirely on Kucherov.
Islanders Bring Momentum and Dangerous Players
New York enters Saturday with a 2-2-0 record following Thursday’s convincing 4-1 victory over Chicago. Islanders captain Bo Horvat scored twice, continuing his impressive start to the season. Horvat has four goals and one assist through four games. Additionally, he has scored three power-play goals.
Meanwhile, Emil Heineman and Anthony Duclair contributed goals against Chicago. New York also received two assists from Logan Stanley, demonstrating its ability to generate offense from defense. The Islanders have outscored opponents 10-1 during their first two home games. Consequently, Tampa Bay cannot afford careless turnovers or unnecessary penalties.
However, New York faces injury concerns entering Saturday. Mathew Barzal remains out with a knee injury, removing an important offensive weapon. Defenseman Alexander Romanov also faces a lengthy absence after suffering a torn ACL. Those injuries could challenge the Islanders’ depth against Tampa Bay’s talented forwards.
One of Saturday’s biggest storylines involves two of hockey’s premier goaltenders. Tampa Bay features Andrei Vasilevskiy, while New York counters with Ilya Sorokin. Both goaltenders possess the ability to steal games through outstanding performances. Vasilevskiy finished ahead of Sorokin in last season’s Vezina Trophy voting.
However, Sorokin enters Saturday in particularly impressive form. Against Chicago, Sorokin stopped 22 shots and nearly recorded another shutout. He has allowed only one goal across his first two home appearances this season. Furthermore, Sorokin recently established a career-best shutout stretch of 165 minutes and 31 seconds.
Tampa Bay must create traffic around the crease and capitalize on second-chance opportunities. Otherwise, Sorokin could frustrate the Lightning throughout the evening. Vasilevskiy should provide Tampa Bay with confidence if he receives Saturday’s starting assignment. Meanwhile, Dennis Hildeby deserves recognition following his performance against Minnesota. Hildeby made 34 saves during Thursday’s victory, helping preserve Tampa Bay’s narrow advantage. Neither team’s Saturday starting goaltender has received confirmation in the sources reviewed.
Special teams could determine which team leaves UBS Arena with two points. Tampa Bay finally converted a power-play opportunity against Minnesota when Carlson scored during the second period. However, the Lightning must establish greater consistency with their man advantage. Meanwhile, New York has enjoyed tremendous early success through Horvat’s power-play production.
The Islanders captain has scored with the man advantage in three consecutive games. Therefore, Tampa Bay must avoid unnecessary penalties and protect the middle of the ice. Another important factor involves faceoffs. Horvat gives New York a dependable center capable of winning crucial offensive-zone draws. Cirelli and Point must respond by controlling possession and limiting extended Islanders attacks.
Additionally, Tampa Bay needs clean defensive-zone exits against New York’s aggressive forechecking. The Lightning cannot allow repeated turnovers that create dangerous opportunities around their crease.
Final Thoughts: Can Tampa Bay Extend Its Winning Streak?
Saturday’s matchup offers Tampa Bay an opportunity to accomplish several important goals. First, the Lightning can extend their winning streak to four games. Second, they can secure an important road victory against a difficult Eastern Conference opponent. Finally, Tampa Bay can end New York’s recent dominance in this head-to-head series.
However, the Islanders enter the contest with confidence following their victory over Chicago. Horvat’s scoring touch and Sorokin’s outstanding goaltending create significant challenges for Tampa Bay. The Lightning must generate consistent offensive pressure while limiting New York’s opportunities on special teams. Kucherov, Point, and Guentzel must lead the offensive attack.
Meanwhile, Hedman and Carlson need to provide stability defensively. This matchup could develop into another tight, defensive contest, much like last season’s meetings. Prediction: Lightning 3, Islanders 2. Tampa Bay has enough offensive talent to break through New York’s defense. However, the Lightning must play disciplined hockey and avoid giving Horvat unnecessary power-play opportunities. If Tampa Bay controls possession and creates traffic around Sorokin, another road victory remains within reach.
