The league picked up four non-conference victories over Power-Four opponents, but lopsided non-conference losses by Boston College, Clemson, and Louisville tempered early-season enthusiasm across the footprint. As Week 2 arrives, conference members seek cleaner execution and sustained momentum.
The national polls showed respect to the league’s top contenders. Four ACC programs feature in the AP Top 25, led by No. 7 Miami—which garnered a first-place vote following its opener. Fresh off a Labor Day night victory over Florida State, SMU sits at No. 17, while Louisville (No. 24) and Virginia (No. 25) round out the ranked field. The US LBM Coaches Poll yields a matching hierarchy, putting Miami at No. 7, SMU at No. 17, and Virginia tied at No. 25.

Historical Stat Explosions Across the Conference
- Mason Heintschel Rewrites Pitt & ACC Record Books: Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Heintschel made history in the Panthers’ 59–14 win over Miami (OH). He broke the ACC single-game record by throwing seven touchdown passes, eclipsing the previous mark of six held by 11 players. The performance tied Pete Gonzalez’s 1997 school record, with all seven touchdowns going to different receivers. Heintschel finished 31-of-41 for 453 yards without an interception to earn ACC Quarterback of the Week honors.
- National Stat Leaders on the Ground and Out Wide: Through Week 1, the ACC has played an FBS-high three conference games. The league leads all FBS conferences with six 300-yard passing performances and eight 100-yard rushing games. Duke running back Nate Sheppard claimed ACC Running Back of the Week status after rushing for an FBS-leading 227 yards against Tulane. Meanwhile, Miami wideout Malachi Toney took home ACC Receiver of the Week honors by setting a Hurricanes single-game record with 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns in a 45–6 rout of Stanford. Toney’s target, quarterback Darian Mensah, completed 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns.
- James Franklin’s Dominant Virginia Tech Debut: New head coach James Franklin opened his tenure in Blacksburg with a 73–3 victory over VMI. The 73 points marked Virginia Tech’s highest scoring output since 1995, while the 45 first-half points were the program’s most in an opening half since 2015. Defensively, the Hokies recorded 18 tackles for loss, their highest single-game total since 1987.
Looking Ahead to Week 2
Three ACC teams—Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse—surpassed the 50-point mark in Week 1, highlighted by the Orange’s 66–3 win over New Hampshire. Week 2 features 14 games across the league slate, with all four ranked programs playing at home. The lone early-season conference matchup takes place in Central New York, where California travels to face Syracuse on Saturday afternoon.
