The sixth installment of the World Baseball Classic is officially in full swing across four global host cities: Miami, Houston, San Juan, and Tokyo. As of today, the tournament’s heavyweights have flexed their muscles, but a few gritty underdogs have signaled that no path to the championship will be easy.
Here is the state of the tournament as the first weekend of pool play intensifies.
Team USA: The Houston Fireworks
Captain Aaron Judge wasted no time setting the tone for the Americans’ title defense. In Friday night’s opener at Daikin Park in Houston, Judge launched a towering two-run home run in the first inning to spark a 15–5 rout of Brazil.
- The Standout: While Judge grabbed the headlines, Brice Turang was the engine of the offense, finishing 3-for-6 with 4 RBIs.
- The Pitching: Logan Webb earned the win with four solid innings, while Mason Miller slammed the door in the ninth, striking out the side to finish the game.
- Up Next: The U.S. (1–0) faces Great Britain tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT. AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal is slated to make his only start of the tournament.
Team Japan: Ohtani’s Tokyo Takeover
The defending champions are already 2–0 and look nearly invincible at the Tokyo Dome. Following a 13–0 mercy-rule win over Chinese Taipei, Shohei Ohtani once again headlined a thriller on Saturday morning (local time), leading Japan to an 8–6 victory over South Korea.
- Ohtani’s Tear: Through two games, Ohtani is 5-for-6 with two home runs (including a grand slam in the opener) and 6 RBIs.
- Suzuki’s Power: Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki added two home runs in the win over Korea to help fend off a late rally.
Dominican Republic: Slugging Past Scares
In Miami, the star-studded Dominican squad overcame a slow start to dismantle Nicaragua 12–3. After falling behind early, the “Big Three” of Junior Caminero, Julio Rodríguez, and Oneil Cruz all homered to turn the game into a blowout. The D.R. is now 1–0 and prepares for a massive clash with Venezuela later this week.
