While most were preparing for evening festivities, the New York Sirens were busy creating their own fireworks at the Prudential Center. In a New Year’s Eve matinee, the Sirens (4–5–0) delivered a defensive masterclass to defeat the expansion Vancouver Goldeneyes (3–4–1) with a decisive 2-0 victory.
The win marks a major turning point for New York, as they enter 2026 on their first back-to-back winning streak of the season.
Osborne’s Brick Wall
The story of the afternoon was Sirens goaltender Kayle Osborne. Despite being outshot for the first time this season (27–26), Osborne was perfect between the pipes.
- The Stat: Osborne turned away all 27 Vancouver shots to record her second shutout of the season.
- The Iron Woman: Osborne remains the only goaltender in the PWHL to have started every single game for her team this season, proving to be the undisputed anchor of the New York defense.
The Czech Sniper Strikes Again
New York didn’t waste any time setting the tone. Just 1:21 into the first period, rookie sensation Kristýna Kaltounková found the back of the net.
- The Play: Using a slick feed from Anna Bargman, Kaltounková beat Vancouver’s Emerance Maschmeyer glove-side to give the Sirens an immediate 1–0 lead.
- Rookie Race: With her fourth goal of the season, Kaltounková now leads all PWHL rookies in scoring and is tied for second overall in the league.
A Milestone for Norcross
After a tense second period where both goaltenders stood tall, the Sirens finally found their insurance goal in the third. At the 4:39 mark, Savannah Norcross capitalized on a scramble in front of the net to tuck home her first career PWHL goal.
-
Depth Scoring: The goal was assisted by Emmy Fecteau and Kayla Vespa, highlighting a “next man up” mentality for a New York squad that was playing without star forward Sarah Fillier (out with a minor injury).
Expansion Blues for Vancouver
For the Goldeneyes, the loss was a frustrating end to 2025. Despite a relentless late-game push where they pulled Maschmeyer for an extra attacker, they were unable to penetrate the Sirens’ defensive shell.
“We’re still a little too perimeter too often,” said Vancouver Head Coach Brian Idalski. “We need to find ways to get into the middle of the ice if we want to create second-chance opportunities.”
Game Notables
- First Points: Four New York players (Norcross, Bargman, Fecteau, and Vespa) recorded their first points of the season in this contest.
- Special Teams: It was a rough day for the power play units; New York went 0-for-5, while Vancouver went 0-for-4.
- Rookie Dominance: New York has now received goals or assists from six different rookies this season—the most in the PWHL.
What’s Next?
The Sirens won’t have long to celebrate their New Year’s victory. They remain at the Prudential Center to host the Montréal Victoire tomorrow, January 2nd, while the Goldeneyes head to Detroit for a neutral-site “Takeover Tour” matchup against the Boston Fleet.
