After a year of anticipation, the 12-team College Football Playoff expansion finally moves from theory to reality this weekend. For the first time, campus sites will host the opening round, bringing the electric atmosphere of Saturday afternoons in Norman, College Station, Oxford, and Eugene to the national postseason stage. We get to see if this now works, or if the CFP format needs more work.
The top four seeds—#1 Indiana, #2 Ohio State, #3 Georgia, and #4 Texas Tech—wait in the wings with first-round byes. For the eight teams playing this weekend, it is a “win or go home” scenario with a trip to the New Year’s quarterfinals on the line.
Friday Night Lights: The SEC Rematch
#9 Alabama at #8 Oklahoma
- Time: Friday, 8:00 PM ET (ABC/ESPN)
- The Story: A month ago, Oklahoma shocked the world with a 23-21 victory in Tuscaloosa. Tonight, the Crimson Tide looks for revenge in Norman. While Alabama outgained the Sooners in the first meeting, three turnovers—including a devastating pick-six—were their undoing. Watch for Tide QB Ty Simpson to test a Sooners secondary that has occasionally been vulnerable to explosive plays. At the same time, Oklahoma’s #1-ranked pass rush looks to feast on a raucous home-field advantage.
Saturday: A Triple-Header of High Stakes
#10 Miami at #7 Texas A&M
- Time: Saturday, 12:00 PM ET (ABC/ESPN)
- The Story: Both programs are making their CFP debuts in a matchup of “underachievers turned contenders.” Texas A&M’s defense is a brick wall, allowing just 14 points per game, but they face a Miami offense led by Carson Beck that can score in bunches. The “12th Man” at Kyle Field will be a factor, but the Hurricanes’ offensive line is one of the few units in the country capable of neutralizing the Aggies’ front four.
#11 Tulane at #6 Ole Miss
- Time: Saturday, 3:30 PM ET (TNT/truTV)
- The Story: A rematch of a September blowout where the Rebels won 45-10. Since then, Tulane has won eight of nine games to secure the American Conference title. The Green Wave features a high-IQ transfer QB in Jake Retzlaff, who leads the nation in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. They’ll need every bit of that creativity to keep up with an Ole Miss offense that ranks 3rd nationally in total yardage.
#12 James Madison at #5 Oregon
- Time: Saturday, 7:30 PM ET (TNT/truTV)
- The Story: The ultimate “Styles Clash.” Oregon is a 21-point favorite at Autzen Stadium, boasting elite speed and a Heisman-caliber season from Dante Moore. However, James Madison brings a grind-it-out philosophy, ranking 10th in scoring defense and 1st in time of possession. If the Dukes can turn this into a slow, heavy “attrition test,” they could stay within striking distance late into the fourth quarter.
