The Compromise: Why the SEC Backed Down
Disaster was averted when LSU President Wade Rousse delivered a formal letter to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey confirming that the Tigers had finalized their 105-man roster without Wright or Harris. By demonstrating full compliance with league directives ahead of their 51–10 Week 1 blowout over Clemson, LSU rendered the SEC’s immediate enforcement complaints moot.
During the high-stakes video conference on Thursday, September 10, SEC presidents and chancellors officially met without taking a vote on LSU’s membership. Furthermore, the conference backed off imposing severe disciplinary measures against the university or issuing a half-season suspension to Kiffin. While the broader federal lawsuits regarding former professional athletes in college sports remain pending in court, the immediate threat of conference expulsion and personal sanctions against Kiffin has been neutralized, leaving the Tigers intact as they navigate the 2026 campaign.
I do not see the LSU Tigers leaving the SEC anytime soon.
