The Washington Wild Things are so close to clinching the playoffs. However, doubt has crept its way into the minds of fans. As a seven-game losing streak has put the Wild Thing’s odds in jeopardy. With three series left in the season, the Wild Things magic playoff numbers remain at seven. Meaning they need to win or for the Mississippi Mud Monsters to lose that many games. Fortunately, the Wild Things have a chance to beat the Mud Monsters head on this weekend.
The Wild Things losing streak began last week on August 14th. Wrapping up a series versus the Trois-Rivieres Aigles Washington lost 1-0. Although that had won the first two games 17-1 and 6-4 so came out of Trois-Rivieres ahead.
Continuing their road trip in Canada Washington visited Quebec. The Quebec Capitales hold an impressive 61-26 record and shut down the Wild Things taking a 6-1, 7-4, and 9-6 victory. Hoping to regain momentum back at home, Washington faced off with Evansville. Previously, Washington had swept the Otters. However, it was Evansville’s chance to return the favor. The Evansville Otters won 4-2, 6-4, and 7-6. This skid put the Wild Things to 47-40 on the season. This is just four games back from the division leading Lake Erie Crushers (50-35).
After the All-Star break the Wild Things were consistent. They won five straight series taking 2 of 3 over the Sussex County Miners, the Windy City Thunderbolts, the Florence Y’alls, and the New Jersey Jackals. The Wild Things then proceeded to sweep the Crushers. However, the Crushers kept the division lead as they managed four sweeps after the All-Star break.
Four teams from each conference will make the Frontier League Playoffs. The two division leaders as well as two wild card teams will face off starting September 3rd. Right now, the Wild Things are three games ahead of the Mud Monsters for the final wild card spot. They are also four games back from the division lead and five games back from the first wild card spot held by the Gateway Grizzlies.
The Wild Things host the Mississippi Mud Monsters this weekend August 22nd-24th. Then they visit the 39-48 Joliet Slammers August 26th-28th. They wrap up the regular season hosting the Down East Bird Dawgs (34-52) for the first time ever from August 29th-31st.
