One month into the second half of the season, the Charleston Dirty Birds find themselves back at the bottom of the standings. Sitting at 11-19, Charleston is only eight games back from the division lead. And with over a month left of ball to play, the Dirty Birds are still alive in the playoff race.
The first half of the season concluded on July 6th, and Charleston ended the first half of the season at 30-33. That put them just ahead of the Gastonia Ghost Peppers. However, in this half, Gastonia is in the division lead at 19-11. The High Point Rockers and York Revolution clinched playoff spots at the end of the first half. And the last two playoff spots are anyone’s game.
Charleston kicked off the second half against the Ghost Peppers on July 8th. The lost game one 8-1 but came out ahead, finishing off Gastonia, winning 6-2 and 7-5. Charleston continued their winning streak versus Hagerstown. Charleston took game one 3-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 win. However, they failed to sweep as Hagerstown took game three 14-6.
Sitting at 4-2, the Birds lost their first series. Charleston failed to get a win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Crabs took game one 4-3 and game two 6-1. The Birds wouldn’t be able to lose game three as it was cancelled due to rain.
Charleston lost again this time versus the Long Island Ducks. The Ducks took the lead early and never let go, winning 5-1. Fortunately, Charleston came back in game two by winning 7-2. But the third game was a battle.

The Dirty Birds started hot with a 7-0 lead. The game stayed even through the sixth, with each team adding two runs apiece. In the seventh inning, Charleston added one, making the game 10-2. However, the Ducks jolted back with 7 runs. 10-9. They both added two again in the eighth. 12-11 And while the Dirty Birds added some insurance in the ninth, their one run wasn’t enough as Long Island added two. They headed into overtime 13-13. Scoreless in the tenth, The Birds took the lead in the eleventh; however, the Ducks tied it up 14-14. In the twelfth, the Dirty Birds scored 3. Would this be enough to end the game? It would as the Ducks’ only brought home 2, ending the game 17-16.
However, Charleston hit a brick wall. That being the High Point Rockers. The Rockers swept the Dirty Birds, winning 6-3, 10-0, and 4-3. They were unable to bounce back in their next series versus the Lexington Legends as they lost two of three.
Down 7-10, Charleston split a four-game series with the Blue Crabs. They took game one 3-2, lost the middle games 7-2 and 7-5, and won the finale 10-3.
In August, they won their first series of the year against the York Revolution. They won 2-1, lost 7-2, and finished if off winning 13-2. In the subsequent series, Charleston got swept again, losing 6-3, 6-2, and 11-8 versus Gastonia. A rematch versus Gastonia followed. Subsequently, Charleston was swept again, losing 6-4, 4-1, and 7-6.
This six-game losing streak versus Gastonia put the Dirty Birds at 11-19. They have a month left of baseball as the season ends on September 18th versus the High Point Rockers. The Dirty Birds’ next series is hosting the Rockers from August 12th to August 17th for a six-game series. The DirtyBirds’ final home series is against Gastonia from September 9th to the 14th.
