The Toledo Mud Hens have been looking to make the playoffs ever since their impressive 1st place division finish in 2021. However, they were unable to make a case for a championship as the playoffs were not held in 2021. The team failed to clinch a spot in the first half of the season but has made a chase for a spot in the second half. Currently, the team sits in third place in the Triple-A International League West at 16-14.
First Half
Toledo’s last time in the MiLB playoffs came in 2018 when they lost to the Durham Bulls. This year, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp clinched the playoffs. They earned the first-half playoff spot for the Triple-A International League. They finished with a 47-28 overall. In the western division, the Nashville Sound and Indianapolis Indians led the way, finishing 44-29 and 42-32, respectively.
In the first half of the season, the Mud Hens finished in the middle of the pack. They struggled at the finish line as they got swept by the Omaha Storm Chasers at home. However, they ended on a good note, defeating the St. Paul Saints on the road 4-2. Overall, Toledo finished 39-36 in the first half.
The Indianapolis Indians have been ahead of the Western division thus far, sitting at 20-10. However, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders lead the way in the league at 23-6. The Syracuse Mets are not far behind with a 23-7 record.
Second Half
The second half began on June 24. Toledo began at home hosting the Charlotte Knights. While they were able to win game one 4-3, they lost four straight before winning the final game 5-3.
Topping off July, Toledo faced off with nearby Columbus. Toledo was able to take this series. They showed strong pitching performances for the most part. They won 4-1, 5-1, 2-1, and 5-4. While they lost 13-0 and 3-1.

On the road, Toledo sought revenge against the Omaha Storm Chasers. They were successful as they won 5 of 6. They won the first 12-8 and dropped the second 7-13. Then they won 3-2, 1-0, 7-6, and 6-1.
In a three-game series versus the Memphis Redbirds, Toledo only came away with one win. They got shut out 7-0 and returned the favor, beating Memphis 3-0. Game three was tight, but they lost 4-3.
Their next series was a challenge as they faced the division-leading Indianapolis Indians. The Indians took three straight winning 7-1, 9-6, and 3-2. The Hens stopped the bleeding, winning 4-3, but gave up the next two games in close fashion. They lost 4-5 and 5-6.
To end off July, Toledo hosted St Paul. Here, the Mud Hens regained their momentum. To end the month of July, they won out. They defeated the Saints 6-5, 4-3, and 7-1.
This put the Toledo Mud Hens at 16-14 a month into the second half of the season. Currently, they find themselves tied with the Nashville Sound in their division and only behind four of the nineteen teams remaining, battling for a playoff spot. The Mud Hens are currently finishing up their series with St. Paul. Next week, they’ll play The Louisville Bats on the road, then host the Columbus Clippers.
