The Charleston Dirty Birds have hit the half-way mark. Unfortunately, the Dirty Birds have failed to swim. At the end of May the team was in 2nd place at 17-16. However, by the end of June Charleston fell to 26-31. Fortunately, Charleston has always been a second half team.
Their first series in June came against division leader High Point. The Rockers had taken the previous two series over the Birds. However, this time around Charleston had some luck. Each game ended within run one, with Charleston winning 5-4 and 2-1. While the High Point Rockers won 3-2.
Next Charleston found themselves facing off with the Gastonia Ghost Peppers for the first time this season. Gastonia saw the ball well in the series taking the first two 15-4 and 7-6. Charleston was able to avoid the sweep taking a 11-8 victory.
Back at home Charleston hosted some interdivision matchups. First, they hosted the Long Island Ducks. However, the Ducks were the better bird taking two out of three. They won 8-5 and 4-3. Charleston won game two 5-4. Their next interdivision matchup was with the Lancaster Stormers. Lancaster stormed off with a 15-6 win in game one. But the Dirty Birds prevailed taking a 10-1 and 4-3 victory to end off the series.
Halfway through June the Dirty Birds went 6-6 keeping themselves on above .500 at 23-22. Unfortunately, over the past few weeks is when the Birds began to sink. First, Charleston suffered heavy losses to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Whom, after making plenty of trades with the Frontier League, have stacked up their offense. Charleston lost 18-7 and 16-1. Game three was postponed until the following week were Charleston won 16-8.
Another new team for Charleston rose as the Dirty Birds met the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars. The Boxcars have struggled this year sitting at 11-37. Charleston took game one 6-2 but choked to the Boxcars losing 7-6 and 4-2 to end the series.
Charleston lost a third series in a row this time versus the Lexington Legends. Lexington took games one and two 10-3 and 11-8. The Dirty birds avoided the sweep again winning 11-10.
To end of the first half of the season, Charleston hosted Gastonia. Although, the Ghost Peppers have Charleston’s number. Charleston ended off the first half of the season getting swept. They lost 8-5, 9-4, and 14-3.
Sitting at 26-31, Charleston failed to clinch a playoff spot. The North first half champion is last year’s champion York Revolution. The South division’s first half champion is the High Point Rockers.
Fortunately, last season Charleston won the second half championship. And are looking to bounce back in July. Thus far Charleston swept Lexington winning 7-2, 9-8, and 13-5. However, they lost the series with Lancaster. Losing 11-10 and 7-5 before taking home a 6-5 win. Sitting at 4-2 in July, a comeback for the Dirty Birds is imminent.
