For Immediate Release: May 14, 2025 — A writer has released a new book that focuses on his worries that generative AI will replace him, so his writing will no longer be needed or read. In Writer’s Last Words – Death By AI, Charles Hartley writes about many “conversations” he has with various generative AI tools. A large percentage centers on whether the machine believes it will make the author’s writing services no longer needed because it can compose competently crafted sentences much faster than he can.
This book is a back-and-forth online dialogue that reveals the author’s concerns that this tool may or may not be giving him honest and accurate answers and may actually be manipulating him because, he suspects, it already is much more intelligent than him. Banter and bickering are ongoing between the author and generative AI tools. The author’s questions span the gamut from being replaced to a psychoanalysis of his favorite songs and books, to a revelation about who his new “father” is. The book also explores comedy writing. In real life, for the past eight years, the author of this book, Hartley, has been writing sports humor blogs using the pseudonym Sammy Sportface.
“I wanted to know if these tools were so good and fast at writing that I would no longer be needed by my employer or any readers of my sports blogs,” said Hartley. “So I asked the tool all kinds of questions on this topic. I come away from the experience still concerned that these tools are going to make my writing no longer necessary. I find that unsettling, yet realize I’m far from alone. I believe countless writers around the world are worried their jobs may no longer be needed. With all that on my mind, I still come away from this whole book-writing experience with new and specific insights on how writers can avoid being replaced by this technology.”
