Most of you don’t know him and he shall remain a mystery because mysteries are alluring. But you should know that Sammy Sportface calls upon his Idea Man every day of the year to concoct blog ideas.
You read the blog and you wonder: “Where did that come from?” and the answer is often “Idea Man.”
This is my ode to Idea Man. You can think of this as kind of like when John Keats wrote “Ode to a Grecian Urn,” the only difference being an urn is a vase and Idea Man is a person.
2024 has been the best of many consecutive years brainstorming with Idea Man usually every morning around 7:05 am and sometimes earlier to discuss whatever’s going on in the world and what Sammy Sportface might want to write about it.
Let’s get something clear: No one understands Sammy Sportface better than Idea Man. Not that that’s some badge of honor but you should be aware of this nonetheless. Idea Man is smart, creative, open-minded, forward-thinking, amusing, engaged, watchful, informed, and a sports fanatic. He’s an intellectual who doesn’t come across like some of them do. He isn’t pretentious and has never wanted to be. He doesn’t criticize. Endless possibilities are the essence of what Idea Man stands for and believes in. While others see what can’t be done, he talks about what can be and should be, and will be.
Looking ahead is his default mindset, always sniffing out the next big thing that everybody’s going to be talking about before they even know they will.
Above all, Idea Man is my friend. As loyal as any friend can be. As fun and light and zealous as any person is capable of.
All of us in the Baby Boomer Brotherhood are blessed to have Idea Man in our lives keeping Sammy Sportface moving ahead while not drifting too far astray from what he needs to be doing in service to this most esteemed group.
Idea Man is an idea himself and that idea is optimism about all the great possibilities we can all enjoy. He is a star in the sky that we look at and wonder how it got so bright.
