BLACKSBURG, Va. – Boston College dropped a 42-21 decision at Virginia Tech on Thursday night at Lane Stadium.
Thomas Castellanos was 17-of-26 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 20 times for 58 yards. Seven different receivers caught a pass on the night, led by Kamari Morales’ five catches for 36 yards. Jeremiah Franklin led all BC receivers with 49 yards – he hauled in three passes, including a touchdown. Treshaun Ward made two catches for 29 yards and a score, while also rushing six times for 22 yards. Turbo Richard led all rushed with 64 yards on nine carries.
After BC punted on its first series, Virginia Tech converted on its first series, taking a 7-0 lead with just over six minutes left. A Castellanos fumble on the Eagles’ next possession gave the Hokies the ball deep in BC territory, Four plays later, Virginia Tech held a 14-0 advantage.
On its next drive, BC registered five first downs and got to the Hokies’ five-yard line. But another mishap gave the ball back to Virginia Tech a minute and a half into the second quarter and the Hokies found the end zone again to take a 21-0 lead with 12:32 to go in the opening half.
After a three and out, Virginia Tech drove it to the BC 24 before Kam Arnold forced a fumble on a quarterback keeper, and Max Tucker pounced on the ball to manufacture a new possession for BC. The Eagles and Hokies traded punts on their next three series and VT extended its lead to 28-0 near the end of the first half.
After the defensive corps started with a stop in the third quarter, Boston College found the end zone on its first drive of the second half. Castellanos connected with Treshaun Ward on a 25-yard TD strike, capping a six-play, 80-yard drive, making it 28-7 with just under nine minutes to go in the period.
BC logged an interception, as Donovan Ezeiruaku put pressure on the Hokies’ signal caller, forcing him into a pass that was picked off by Cameron Martinez at the VT 29 yard line. Four plays later, Castellanos connected with Jeremiah Franklin on an 11-yard touchdown reception, making it 28-14 with 6:07 left in the third.
The duo of Ezeiruaku and Martinez combined to force a fumble and recover it, respectively, giving BC the ball again deep into Hokie territory. Six plays, 18 yards, and 2:46 later, Robichaux punched it into the end zone, making it 28-21 with 2:55 left in the third.
Another big defensive stand – keyed by a sack by Martinez – forced another second half VT punt, but the Eagles turned the ball over on downs and Virginia Tech made BC pay three plays later, extending its lead to 35-21 with 11:02 left. The Eagles drove deep in the VT territory but could not convert on two passes into the end zone and missed out on the 37-yard field goal attempt by Liam Connor due to a bad snap. Virginia Tech would tack on another touchdown with 8:28 to play, moving the score to 42-21.
Martinez led Boston College in tackles with seven, including five solo, a sack, and an interception. Five different Eagles – Ezeiruaku, Daveon Crouch, KP Price, Owen McGowan, and Carter Davis each logged six tackles apiece.
The Eagles finished with 372 yards of total offense (205 passing; 167 rushing), logging 23 first downs and 74 total plays. BC was 7-of-15 on third down.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Oct. 25 when it hosts Louisville at Alumni Stadium on Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
