We’re all bad in our own ways and that’s because we’re human. But when you take a close look at some college football coaches, you start to wonder why so many of them seem to be worse human beings than most of society. Something about getting a lot of money and power and needing to win on Saturdays to keep their jobs makes them repellant and not the kinds of people any of us would nominate for any kind of great citizenship awards.
I am thinking specifically right now about Brian Kelly, the coach of LSU, and Lane Kiffen, coach of Ole Miss, whose teams tangle tomorrow. Being brutally honest, I hope both teams get thrown out of the stadium for having two coaches so unimpressive that the referees decide to just call the game a double forfeit.
Not sure if you know much about Brian Kelly, but suffice it to say every time I’ve seen him he’s been arrogant, angry, condescending, and cold. For several years he coached at Notre Dame until they kicked him out because so many people flat out didn’t like the way he behaved. Such a cuss you are, Brian. Why so mean? Why do you belittle reporters who ask you questions? Why do you have to make sure you show everybody you’re powerful by letting them know you think – you know – you’re smarter than the reporter?
Shut up, Brian Kelly.
Earlier this season your team lost and you lost your cool and slammed your fist on a table during a press conference. The last thing I would ever want to do is play for your team. My priority is to never be near you.
You aren’t much better, Lane Kiffen. A few weeks ago you brought your much more talented team to play at Wake Forest and had your players repeatedly fake injuries to slow Wake’s offense. You’ve been given plumb, high paying coaching jobs your whole career, buying big houses, and boats to fishing with your girlfriend 30 years younger, and none of this impresses me one bit.
You got lucky.
Yet you still are surly and a chicken sleaze. You didn’t have to fake injuries to beat Wake but you did it anyway because you want to win so you can brag to your girlfriend out on the boat.
Kelly and Kiffen are the latest college football coaches to show us how not to behave. I believe, and so do many other people I believe, that Jim Harbaugh cheated last year to win a national championship then sleazed his way out of Michigan to coach in the pros where he can’t be prosecuted.
Urban Meyer is unbelievably self-centered and mean and ran one of the most corrupt football programs ever while at U. of Florida. A bad person you would never tell your kids to emulate.
Then there was Bobby Petrino. While coaching at Louisville he hired a volleyball player to be his personal assistant who was some 20 years younger. She was actually his girlfriend while he had a wife and kids at home, betraying all of them.
He took her out for a motorcycle joyride and crashed and got caught with her and it all came to light that he, a college football coach, was not a good person.
Makes you wonder: With all the pressure now intensifying on college football coaches to pay more talented players more money to join their teams so they keep winning, how much more reprehensible are they going to become?
How many more college football coaches are we going to be lumping in with the Brian Kellys, Lane Kiffens, Urban Meyers, and Bobby Petrinos as people this world should not be impressed with?
A corrupt system that has become more corrupt is bound to produce even more college football coaches behaving poorly.
Not something to look forward to. Greed and lust for winning, power, and control never bring out the goodness in people.
